New Baker discovers tin differences....

Hi I am pretty new to baking and have just discovered the great differences in 2lb loaf tins. I use 500g flour but was getting a variety of results depending on the tin. I have just discovered the perfect tin for 500g flour sandwich loaf. I was so happy to get the tallest loaf I have ever made. So a tip for new bakers the tin might make the difference....I am now using the shorter deeper tin and will definitely increase my recipe for the larger tin...both these tins are suppose to be 2lb tins.

Its amazing, isn't it, the difference a simple thing such as a tin can make.

Nice looking sandwich loaf!

yes it was driving me crazy...I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. The bread was nice enough but looking smaller and was thinking my oven spring wasn't up to scratch...anyway this is now my tin for 500g flour will have to work out bakers math for the other tin .

which will makes the math easy, and then you'll have enough dough for the big pan and you can practice making dinner roles with the left over dough.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the big loaf pans needs half again as much DOUGH as your little pan.

Post pictures when you try it out!

I was going to try an extra 100g flour and hope the mixer could handle it. But not sure if 100g is enough ...wouldn't have to increase yeast or salt for that much extra  just bit more liquid....worth a try.

If the pan to the rear is 4.5 x 8.5 inches, it is nominally a 1.5 pound tin. and should be right for 750g of dough.  Your 500g of flour makes about 800 - 825g of dough.  I'd consider the loaf you like to be a little bit over-tall, i.e. it will stick out the top of the toaster. Not a big deal.

The pan in front, if I'm not fooled by the perspective is 5 x 9in and is about right for a 2lb loaf.  A two pound loaf takes about 1000g of dough (~625g of flour).

Note, the finished weight is roughly 90% of the dough's original weight.  Thus, 1kg of dough yields 900g of bread; almost exactly 2lb and 750g of dough yields 675g of bread, again almost exactly 1.5 lbs.

I ran immediately to my toaster to check ...all is good it fits ...phew ! Didn't think of that. Thanks Gary that is really helpful info. I will be copying it to notes. I will try 600g flour in the longer pan to see what size slice I get. I still have a lot to learn I will take note of dough weight from now on...
