Hobart era K5SS kitchenaid mixer making grinding noise, HELP!!!!!

Hello everybody!

I recently purchased a Hobart era K5SS mixer. Heres the rundown:

It was in perfect clean condition when I received it, ran nicely (no issues whatsoever, no grinding noises.)

However, I saw a yellow tint around the trim band (suspected it may have been oil) so i thought it might need a grease change. I opened it up and found that the grease looked almost brand new, i was shocked! So i  just cleaned up around the trim band with dry paper towels and put everything back together.

): This is where things begin to get sad... I started up my beautiful mixer and VNRINGRIOGNIROEN I hear this horrid grinding noise!

I scour the internet for cures or causes and many say its the worm gear and that the teeth are damaged etc. I know this is not the case because 1. It was PERFECT before I opened it (never even USED it yet) and 2. I opened it back up and the gears are PERFECT as well!!! I checked all of the other gears and they too are perfect (no missing teeth, no metal flakes or deposits which is a sign of broken teeth) :(

Whats wrong with my mixer? I suspected that A. The brushes were not touching the armature B. I knocked something loose while hammering the groove pin out C. When I mated the top and bottom covers I did not make sure the gears meshed well.

So far I've checked the motor brushes (they were perf.)

I checked for anything loose inside of the mixer (i see nothing yet... at least)

And I've mated and checked that the gears have meshed for the third time now.

WHAT DID I DO???????? PLEASE HELP ME I LOVE THIS MIXER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have a stethoscope? Either a medical or auto-motive would work. Maybe the stethoscope could narrow down the area where the noise originates. In a pinch a small metal rod or a large nail could be held against the unit and placed by the ear to listen while it is running.

I've had 2 Kitchenaids, although newer models, and the gears were always the problem. Sounds like you had a really good look at the gears. When mine go bad I can see very light wear makes on one side of the gear teeth. Good news is if it is the gears they are cheap and easy to repair.

Have you checked the manual to make sure that is is assembled properly? you can download them on-line.

Have you looked at the planetary gears that are located beneath the top of the unit? Just guessing.

Hope you get is sorted out soon...

I will try to listen out harder to where the noise is coming from.

I have my mixer in two pieces, the top and the bottom (bowl-lift model.) Can you turn on the mixer and run it while it's in two? maybe then I could see the gears in action and hear where the grinding is coming from.

Although the gears sound like the most plausible cause of the grinding, I cannot see how its possible when before i opened it, it was perfectly fine (never even used it before, was just testing.) but after i open it and put it back together the gears strip? just from... opening it? :/

I will take a closer look at the gears, again... I'll also check out the planetary gears closer too.

thanks a lot for your help and well-wishes. Also, where did you purchase your replacement gears?

I wouldn't think that you would strip the gears by opening the unit. But it may be possible that when you opened the top cover that something got out of place.

Replacement Parts - Google it. They are available all over. Even Amazon has many of the parts.

If I remember right you can run the motor with the top off. Although the gear train needs to be taken out. You can't run the gears with the top open because the top of the transmission cover (underneath the mixer cover) holds them in place.

With a stethoscope you could listen to the assembled unit while it is running.

I am assuming that your mixer is much the same as my bowl lift Kitchenaid model.

Hello. Thanks for all of the help.

Here I have a video showing you my worm gear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJpCiNTbIWs

How does it look?

Can't tell from the video. But your gear train is different from mine. Maybe someone with your model will be able to help.

Good Luck!

Yesterday I made a discovery.

The shaft that is surrounded by the center bevel gear will not push upwards to expose its pin so that it can be removed from the planetary. Instead, the shaft and the center bevel gear move upwards as a unit... This video shows what is supposed to happen (start it at 6:52) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f7A5DKslWg&t=471s

This shaft should easily push upwards and expose its pin. I also see that in my diagram. http://www.kitchenaidparts.eu/documents/pdf/service-manual/classic-svc-manual-new-email-version.pdf page 19/42

Video of my center bevel gear & shaft:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haHylhxgv-c

Though I didn't show it in my video, I tried pushing up the shaft with all of the force I had. I made sure the pin was aligned correctly to come out as well :/

Am I doing something wrong?

if its a kitchen aid, go on line( youtube) look at the repair videos for your mixer (replacing gear). that way you will know what inside of your mixing. I believe the plastic housing holding the gears in place is cracked and some gears have to be replace. I done this. Watch the videos, they will help

Thanks for your suggestions. I don't have any plastic housing in my model but I'll definitely check out YT for more videos.

The plastic housing is inside with the gears.
