Dehydrator Recommendation

Happy new year everyone.  I'm on the verge of getting a grain mill, and so I'm thinking ahead to making sprouted flour.  I know a few of you do this.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, not too expensive dehydrator?

I have run several hundred batches through my Nesco  Gardenmaster over the years with good results and it just keeps going.

Phil,  I got a used one off ebay,  but one tip I read is that a square dehydrator will have a greater capacity for the same amount of counter space.   Also, you will likely need some grids or liners to go on the trays ,  most dehydrator grids are too far apart to hold grains.  I bought some plastic grids from Michaels, but some dehydrators offer an accessory for smaller items.

fruit rollups and 2 for small things like seeds so it works perfectly for the sprouts I do every week about 500 g dry at a time.  I have dried corn, jerky and all kinds if fruit.  Works great for me

Hi, Phil:

I use a 9-tray Excalibur, which is probably a bit pricier than the ones with smaller capacity and power.  But think of the time you will save by being able to dry larger batch each time and not have to repeat the process frequently, to me, it's worth the investment.  I found the best deal on Amazon.

I can recommend this one if you can get it where you are:

Comes with 6 trays which are all deep and sturdy and made of plastic so won't ever rust and can be flipped through the dishwasher easily.

The trays come with the plastic mesh inserts as shown above which hold the grain well.

I like the stackable tray dehydrators because you only need to use as many trays as you need.  That limits the size (or at least height) of the whole thing.  The hydrators with trays that slide in from the side are always the same size.  Also there's no wasted drying space.  If you fill 2 trays with grains then 2 trays is all you use plus the top lid.  With the other type of dehydrators I suspect that if you put just 2 trays in you'd still be supplying warm air to the entire rest of the unit (empty space).

This machine dries the sprouted berries in a few hours.  I've also dried fruits and vegetables in it, made fruit licks, and then there is the absolute piece de resistance, the beek jerky !   If you buy a dehydrator you just have to make jerky in it !   Get the freshest prime fillet beef cuts, thinly sliced, marinate in your choice of spices and run through the dehydrator to get fantastic beef jerky !

Good luck.

Thanks for the great suggestions everyone.  I now have my mill and sifter, so I'm ready to get going.  One more question.  Do you generally substitute sprouted flour 1 for 1, or is there a general principle about the percentage of sprouted flour to use?
