KitchenAid repair

The speed on My KitchenAid Pro610 isn't working properly. It won't turn on at lower speeds; I have to turn it to high (throwing dry flour all over the place), then turn it down to a lower setting. Sometimes it stays at high speed even at the lower setting, until I jiggle the speed lever.

Is this a do-it-yourself fix? For example, a loose connection or a piece of metal that needs to be re-shaped?

KA's mechanical design of the speed control is very basic but clever with a spring-tensioned lever slipping into little embayments (hence the clicks you feel as you advance it). With a bent lever, the spring tension isn't sufficient to allow it to fall into the lower settings. Very annoying when it happens.

If the lever has been bent you can fix it easily. You do need remove the upper casing - there are several YouTube videos that show you how to do so (safely, of course) - with minimal tools. I was given a KA with the same problem and some careful straightening with pliers of the ever-so-slightly-curved lever fixed the problem. If DIY isn't your thing, don't worry, this is not a major challenge for anyone with a tool kit and a work bench. With luck, you'll know someone who can do this.

Contact cleaner might not be a good idea as this is not a standard electrical switch but a governor for how fast the motor runs. You would be spraying liquid inside the casing of an exposed electric motor.
