Walnut, almond beigli from ITJB

It has been a while since I have baked something from Inside the Jewish Bakery -- too long.  Beigle or Hungarian filled rolls as described in the book are still one of the BEST things I have ever taken out of my oven!

Walnut and almond you say? Well I made a 1/4 batch of walnut filling and it was only good to cover half of the rolled out dough. Out of walnuts, I made a second batch of filling using almonds, so the inner part is walnut and the outer rolls almond. YUMMY!!!

I have frozen most of it, but there is still a slice on my cutting board and as my chicken dinner is cooking in the smoker, I sneak small slices of this beigle heaven!

I can't stop eating this! It really is one of the best things I have ever taken out of my oven.

I'm going to have to start another pizza dough now. The first with 00 was just great!

Looking at the picture it reminded me to Slovenian "Orehova Potica" - walnut cake in bad translation. Hungary is our neighbor country so no surprise that the food should be quite similar. I feel the taste of your bake in my mouth right now.

It also reminded me that I have to prepare a post about the Slovenian "Orehova Potica" which we eat for holidays like Christmas or Easter. You haven't published a detailed recipe, but I would bet that it is not far away from our "potica".

Well done and happy baking Skibum!

I would love to see your potica! I am sure it would be similar to the Hungarian beigli. The filling is ground nuts, sugar lemon zest and water and cooked down for 15 minutes. The dough is enriched with sugar and eggs and is described in the book as a coffee cake dough. Not a difficult recipe at all and I still say one of the best things to ever come out of my oven!

Walnuts and almonds are expensive here and reserved for special occasions! This is so delicious!

Those nuts are relatively expensive here too and not an every day indulgence. this batch of beigli is so good, I will have to make another one soon. Next one will be poppy seed which is on my shopping list and is another excellent filling.
