Rye berries vs cracked rye

Can one substitute whole berries for cracked rye? I cannot find CR in my community and cracking it in my Vitamix is a hit-and-miss affair.

I cannot find cracked rye either (I write from Davis, CA), but I do have a Vitamix.  In my hands, efforts to make cracked rye with the Vitamix produce a mix of very finely ground all the way to virtually untouched rye berries.  It's this mix I use when I make Danish rye bread.  I soak it all in water overnight and add it to my mix in the morning when I make the final dough.  Works for me.

I have had brilliant success with Nuts.com:

Organic Cracked Rye Berries

and I get my whole wheat flour, rye flour, sunflower seeds, and lots of other things there too.

No, I don't work for them or get a kickback, but I should!!
