G'day from South Australia

By way of introduction, my name is Joanne aka mickeydownunder in the food world online too!

I have a blog for fun, not business, called What's On The List
http://www.whatsonthelist.net

I am a new Thermomix owner who initially had one on loan making over 80 dishes in less than three weeks.

I was not previously a baker, but baking excites me and yearn to learn heaps more things too!

I look forward to learning and sharing through your website!
Cheers! Joanne

Hi from another South Aussie (Happy Valley) obsessed with home sourdough bread baking.  You will find this site to be inspiring, informative and populated with like minded, helpful Loafers, both domestic and professional (and their four footed 'apprentices' (hi Lucy).

Don't know much about the Thermomix, other than you need to mortgage the house in order to purchase.  Can they be used in any stage of bread making?   We here in SA have it rather more difficult to source ingredients compared to the US or UK.  But we manage eh?

Hope you keep us informed of what you are up to.

Hi and welcome to TFL!

I'm a former Adelaidian now living OS but am coming home for Christmas and would like to do some baking while there.  Any tips on where to get some good flour?  Can I get fresh yeast from the supermarket?  Is rye flour readily available?

Cheers, Stuart

Hi Stuart

Adelaide does not have much of a range of different flours. I have never seen rye flour in in any supermarkets here, however there are a couple of good sources, Goodies'n'Grains in the Adelaide Central Market in the city.  They stock a good range of flours (light and dark rye, and surprisingly, durum wheat (semolina) flour.  They also have a range of other flours (buckwheat, soy, etc), cracked and rolled wheat and rye.  They are all binned.  There is also another bulk storage facility, Gaganis Bros in Hindmarsh who also stock lots of good stuff.  They both have listed products on their websites.  Some health food stores also stock rye flour

White Bakers flour is readily available in supermarkets, but not wholemeal bakers flour.  As far as fresh yeast is concerned, it is hard to come by.  I have a local supermarket that stocks it, but this is rare.  I only know what is available south of the city, dont know where you will be staying.  Some bakeries will sell you some if you ask.  I also keep 3 sourdough starters (rye, 60/40 rye white. and white, all 100% hyd) and could let you have some if youare into   sourdough baking.

G'day Stuart and Sondra

I found this online...seems Sondra has previously asked people too

I have had no difficulty in sourcing bread flours I want whether for home use or bulk baking use.

I am partial to the Four Leaf brands as the company supports local farmers and local businesses and also has quite a large variety

There are also many yeast options available. I am including this link as an example only

There are many farmers markets where grains are sold ie

Rye Flour

I have been in Adelaide since 1997 and things have come a very long way! With very few exceptions, I have been able to source almost any food, grain, ingredient I have set out to find! Hope this helps!

Cheers! Joanne
