Hobart N50 speed selector very hard to move.

Help!   I just bought an older N50 on e-bay in very nice condition, but the speed selector is really hard to move.  Any idea what could be the problem? When it's running the mixer sounds fine in all three speeds.

Thanks,

Bob

I'm assuming that the mixer is off and the gears have stopped spinning when you're trying to change speed? The on-off switch is designed to only allow the gear shifter to move when it's in the 'off' position. Perhaps something there is misaligned.

A simple check would be to take off the gear lever cover (unplug the mixer first). Remove the 6 screws holding it on and gently prise it off and have a peek behind there. If nothing's obvious in that far (you can easily see how the mechanism works) you're probably looking at pulling apart the mixer and checking out its internals which is obviously a more major job. PM me if you want the service manual.

Thanks for the information and the N50 shop manual.

Have you called onesharpcompany.com?  They know lots about these machines and have been very helpful to me when I had such a problem.

Thanks for the link.  I'll give them a call next week.  It seems like it may need some work.  I'm hoping I can find a good repair shop in the Philadelphia area.
