Will work for RAM
I thought I had nailed the problem, but the server slowed down again this evening. Looks like it is running out of RAM. I've ordered more RAM, but it may take a day or two for it to get installed. Thanks for your patience.

RAM installed, server rebooted. Hopefully we won't have any more excitement for a while now.

What kind of error logs were you getting that made you want to add RAM? Did something change that would suck memory pages? That's an Apache server isn't it?

Yeah, this site is on a linux box running apache and mysql.
I installed sar so I could see what was happening during the slowdowns. It looks like under high loads DB was getting swapped to disk, which created a logjam which could render the site unreachable for hours. Why it just started happening lately, I'm not sure, but going up to 2 GB RAM seemed appropriate. Heck, my laptop has 2 gigs of RAM these days...
