Bosch Universal Grease Thingie

While I enjoy using my Bosch Universal over my KA - it does an incredible job with all types of flour, I find that when I'm finished kneading the dough (speeds 1 or 2) at the top of the shaft, there often is a smudge of dark grease - or something.  I remember asking about this and was told that the "grease" was OK, not to worry.  But, I wonder.

Do others have this experience as well?

I'm actually thinking about buying myself a DLX and gifting this one to my daughter who bakes all the time, but not if there are any issues (granted, I haven't experienced ill effects, but I do have two little grand-daughters to consider).

Thanks,

Diane

I have the same thing, it's not really grease. It's more like aluminum wearing off of the dough hook.  I ended up buying plastic discs that help keep the dough from entering, you can find them on breadtopia I think, and Amazon.

That's interesting.  I went to breadtopia, and I'm not sure what to look for.

Thanks,

Diane

here.  It says it is to keep dough from creeping up the center column and into the shaft well, but it will also serve as a lubricating disc under the dough hook hub.  It looks like something I'd like to have around as well.  My old Bosche mixer is 30+ years old, but it has that same dough-creep problem, especially with wet doughs, and it sometimes shows that smear of dark as well.  This looks like it might help.  At $2.00 it is worth a try.

First, to Old Wooden Spoon, thanks for the suggestion to buy the plastic dough creep gizmo. I bought one from Breadtopia, which has amazing service. As chance would happen, when I inserted the gizmo, I made the world's worst dough - ever -  evidently, my 10 year old sourdough went kaput, and like a bad scene from a science fiction movie, the dough had a life force of its own, dough goo that made long angles as I tried to extract it from the hook and bowl. Long story, short, I was soaking the plastic thing in sudsy water, and my kind husband cleaned the bowl and the plastic thingie went down the drain.

Fast forward to visiting my daughter in PA for the holidays. This time I ordered 2 more plastic gizmos from Breadtopia, and brought my Bosch and all to her house.  That little plastic gadget works marvelously well (not sure why Bosch doesn't sell it with their mixer) - no traveling dough or dark streaks anywhere near the dough.  I left the Bosch Universal with my daughter and came home, empty-handed. I watched DLX YouTubes in multiple languages (including Russian) to get a sense of its virtues.  I called each online store that sells the DLX to ask their opinion regarding the DLX vs Bosch. Every place told me to buy the Bosch.

My daughter loves the Bosch Universal. She's been using it several times a week, baking whole wheat, pizza dough, sweet dough - and truth be told, the tunnel bread I asked about in "Challenges" is her bread. Like mother, like daughter, we both love baking bread, whether it's tunneling or goo strings ;->

To Johnr55:  It's another Bosch for me. And yes, I am going to order the metal bowl, whichever one works for the model. Thanks for the suggestion.
