I guess there are different types of black walnuts. I would like to find a bulk source for the strong-flavored kind that "Diamond" has. I recently tried some local "california black walnuts" but was disappointed at how bland they were. I'm guessing the full flavored ones come from the Eastern US? Thanks for any help.

Hammons?
I have some Hammons brand on hand just because I couldn't find black walnuts in the local stores. Their site has a locator for hulling locations near your zipcode. Might be worth a try.

Thanks
Thanks for that. No locations, but shipping doesn't look too bad.
sister species?
Yep, according to Wikipedia the "eastern black walnut" and the "California black walnut" are different species, and the degree of genetic relatedness is still a matter of some debate. The eastern black walnut is a tree, widely distributed in eastern (and even central) parts of north america. The California black walnut on the other hand is a large-shrub/small-tree found almost exclusively in southern California.
However, low cost and easy availability may give precedence to the California black walnut for you. If so, try toasting and/or salting them --which is simple and quick-- to see if you like that taste better. Toasting often changes the flavor of nuts significantly.
