My starter is very active ... it pops the lid open when its in the fridge! is this a bad thing/problem ?
what do I do in order to prevent any nastyness getting inside it? - find another jar? (it currently lives in a plastic container with a lid w. an airhole)

Finding a bigger jar would
Finding a bigger jar would probably be the easiest way to solve this problem. I use a glass jar with a canning lid put on loosely. However, if the starter is this active in your refrigerator, perhaps the temperature is too high. You might want to decrease the temperature for the sake of all the other items that need to be kept cool and bacteria-free.

Thanks for your advice :)
yeah I know - its a crap fridge. The landlord put in a discount kitchen and both the owen and fridge are old.
active starter
It sounds like you may need to invest in an inexpensive fridge thermometer just for safety sake. It might surpise you. If it shows between 33-35 to 40 or so, then you should be ok. Jean P. (VA)
