A tip or two:  this site is much more than the home page.  Always remember that whatever question you're thinking of asking will probably have been asked many times in the past.  Use the search function on the home page upper left.  Also, since what we do is best taught by watching someone else doing it, don't limit yourself to this site.  Check out the videos here and on Youtube.

About books:  while there are lots of books to read on bread baking, usual cookbooks are not necessarily your cup of tea.  Spend time reading about the bread cookbooks and compare them to actual textbooks.  In the latter category there are many that are far too large for the beginner.  I recommend DiMuzio's Breadbaking as an excellent beginner's text.  It's short and sweet as compared to the texts for serious students of baking at culinary schools.  Once you learn a bit, you can then move on to the bread cookbooks and realize how little you actual need of what's written there.

Another thing:  try to find someone local to you who's an enthusiastic bread maker at home.  Work with that person to learn how doughs should look and feel.

Finally, try and try.  Experiment with this and that as often as possible.  Learn from your mistakes.  Then tell us what you did.  What'd love to know.

Hi Alex, and welcome!  "Singapore" caught my eye ...I used to travel for Hewlett Packard to Singapore a lot (1150 Depot Road site) ...maybe 15 or 20 times, something like that.  Someday I'd like to grab the family and bring them with me on vacation to S'pore... But in any case, don't hesitate to dive in and get involved around here.  There is LOTS of help and info available through this site!
