Green roof for a brick bread oven

Hello!

We've started to build our brick bread oven. The concrete foundation is ready and the design in place, in the Spring we'll start on the brickwork. Everything is decided apart from the roof.

Inspired by a roof topped with thyme I'd seen on Dan Lepard's website (Jack Langs?), we're considering doing something similar. The question is how to do it?

Can anyone help to point me in the right direction? e.g. resources on the internet, books, or personal experiences.

We'll tile the roof if this doesn't work out, but it seems like such a great solution.

Many thanks in advance.

Joss, as an architect it has been many years since I was involved in a roofing project for planting and plaza activity above an occupied space. My experience has been that planters in these configuration do tend to leak over time. So the most important thing to do is provide roof details for drainage so water will not stand for any prolonged time. Another issue is the added weight of the planting materials, plants and water that is retained in the planting medium. A brick oven design would also inject a heat factor that might possibly have an effect on the planting of a roof garden, therefore insulation would be important here. Here is a reference from a quick google search where you may get some ideas and additional insight:

I'll do more checking to see if I find a reliable resource. You might talk to roofing contractors in your area for some additional insight.

I'm not sure what you meant to do, but I'm pretty sure you did not mean what you actually did.  Your link to the "quick google search" turned out to be a link back to this same TFL thread.

I'm interested in the information you turned up as well so I hope you can correct it, or just publish the keywords you searched with.  I find many, many links, but I'd like to review those that you found appropriate since I've no standing at all to judge it.

Thanks for the contribution!
