Raisin Challah
Hi Everyone-
With the Jewish holidays right around the corner, I am wondering if any of you have a raisin challah recipe that you recommend. In the past I have made Nick Maligieri's braided challah but I am looking for something new- and with raisins. Suggestions for the round-shaping are welcome too!
Thanks!
Beth

Well, I may not have tried it yet, but King Arthur did just post a recipe today for a raisin challah bread seen here; KAF Raisin Challah.
Perhaps give it a whirl and tell us what you think!
That's funny- I got their e-mail today with that recipe and that was what prompted me to write this post! Thanks for your response. I just might try it and let you know how it is.

These were just so delicious. The recipe for the sourdough challah formula is from Maggie Glezer's 'A Blessing of Bread'. I added golden raisins to the long braided loaf and you can read how I added them at my blog posting HERE and get the recipe posted on dmsnyders blog HERE. The raisins can also be added into the round challah. ADDED..link to braiding the round challah HERE

Thank you Sylvia! These are gorgeous. I am definitely going to braid a round challah.
Your welcome! Oh I love shaping the round challah..it's fun and actually surprises you how easily the round shape comes about.
Sylvia
but I believe the correct word for more than one challah is challot?
Sylvia
Also from "A Blessing of Bread"
Someday, I'm going to make a challah as gorgeous as Sylvia's!
David
I think your challot are gorgeous and the crumb is mouthwatering.
Sylvia
for a taste comparison of David's and Sylvia's challot.
Both are gorgeous.

I have a great challah recipe that is posted at:
http://breadmantalking.blogspot.com/2009/10/challah.html
This is truly great challah that is rich without being too sweet. Brioche-like but not quite. Add 1/2 cup raisins to the dough after the first rise knead to distribute evenly and then shape (round for the holidays).

Thank you so much David. This sounds really good- and easy!
Beth
Enjoy!
Have a happy and healthy New Year!
David
Thanks- you too!
Well here is one of the four. I don't know how it tastes but it looks pretty good!
If you can save us a crumb shot :)
Sylvia
Thanks Sylvia. I will try to remember to take another photo.
Thanks also for the link on how to braid the round challah. I printed it out and had it next to me as I worked. It was very helpful!

I also opened the web page and consulted the pictures. It looks fantastic... and I love the idea of 'weaving' the bread. I made 4 loaves: 2 with raisins 2 without (can you believe it some people don't like raisins!).
Happy New Year to all... and a wonderful year to everybody even if it's not your New Year!
