Hammarplast Bowl

Does anyone use a Hammarplast Bowl when letting their dough rise?  Carol Field talks about them in her book "The Italian Baker".  Better yet, does anyone have one for sale.  I would sure love to find one.  If anyone even has a picture of one it would be greatly appreciated.  I've only been able to find a drawing of one.

It's just a plastic bowl.  Nothing magical about it.

I personally prefer a glass bowl so I can see the dough development.  Probably cheaper, too.

Thanks for the info.  Some people swear by them.  I've read a thread from Cooks magazine where someone was heartsick that his hammarplast bowl died on him...........perhaps for sentimetal reasons....go figure.  I agree a more organic bowl such as pottery or glass is wonderful to proof in.  Carol Field's bowl had a glass top so you could gauge the rise of your dough.  Thank you for you information.

Hi Lyn,

I did a bit more reading on those bowls; apparently they had little feet attached so the base of the bowl didn't sit on the counter. A lot of people liked them because they claimed the bowls made their dough rise faster because of the footed bowl.

If so, that's not such a good thing since faster rise = less fermentation = less flavor.

Hammarplast discontinued manufacturing that model some time ago.

Thanks so much for all the information.  Isn't it interesting how attached we can get to something we use so often in a ritualistic fashion such as breadmaking?  I guess that's why some people love the Hammarplast bowl.  My favorite items are two heavy linen cloths from France that cover my dough on it's final rise before going into the oven.  Bread making just wouldn't be the same without them!

Once again, my sincere thanks for your help.

Ah-ha. Instead of a footed bowl, use a trivet under the bowl to even the temperature all around the bowl.

They are so very hard to find.  Just checked Ebay and you're in luck.  Check out this auction.  These may be what you want. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Hammarplast-Melamine-Dough-Mixing-Bowls-bowl-x2-/290525368092?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a4a94f1c

Sad to lose a good friend, good luck and hope these bowls are what you want.

Hello Again:

I was just on Hammarplast's website: http://www.hammarplast.com/household.aspx.  They have a Dough Bowl in their catalogue on line.  The only problem is if they will ship to America.

I live in Canada and just emailed them asking if they would ship to me.  It would be interesting to see if they reply.  I live in hope, I've been looking for a dough bowl for a long time. Hopefully it would be cheaper than anything that comes up on Ebay.

Hope this helps!

Regards,............Lyn

Received a prompt email from Hammarplast management in Sweden, and they will definitely NOT ship to America.

TheIR catalogue on line has the covered dough bowl done in environmentally friendly plastic.  It is the new edition of the old standby that so many love.

So unless someone can find a store in Sweden that will sell to America, we are out of luck.

Yes, they are still making a dough bowl, here is the link:http://www.hammarplast.com/?id=1748&cat=13116&prod=13120

I would love to have one, and I am sure others would too.  You're lucky to have a family member who is Swedish!

Thank you so much for your input................it is very much appreciated.

Lyn

Well this is a surprise! So kind of you to offer.  What would you be asking for them?  I live in Canada and wonder what shipping would be?

Once again my sincere thanks.
