Organic flour supplier in San Diego?

My local supplier, Lakeside Bakery Supply has just dropped all organic flours from their lineup.  Ack!  I go through 50-lb bags every month or so, and can't stomach buying 5lb bags of organic flour at the grocery, when I was getting organic bread flour for around 60 cents/pound.  I'm trying to find Sperry Organic Bread Flour and Sperry Organic Hygluten, or any other high gluten organic, and soon!  Anyone found a supplier, even in the LA area?  Thanks,

-Peter

Peter,

I get Giusto's Baker's Choice organic flour at People's, but not at as good a price as you were paying.  It's about $1 per pound, in 50 pound bags.  You have to pay an annual $15 membership to order it.  I'm happy with the flour.

Here is the link to the company site (Sperry appears to be owned by Gold Medal) with the local rep. listings.  You can try emailing them and find out if there are other local stores carrying their flour.

I'd love to hear what you find out!

Hi Marni,

I got in touch with Nancy Muller, the Southern California rep for GM.  She gave me two contacts:  Cypress Farms in Huntington Beach and Golden Bake in Cerritos.  Cypress Farms doesn't carry Sperry organic and Golden Bake isn't sure what they have (the person I spoke with had poor English).  I'm still looking and will report on what I find.

It turns out my local supplier has another organic flour, one they've apparently been stocking for a secret buyer in the area and one which, praise the heavens, I'll be able to buy.  I can now get Sperry organic bread flour for $18 for a 50lb bag!  This is even cheaper than the non-organic GM flour, and it performs really well.  I wrote a blog post that chronicles my results with this new flour, and I'm very pleased.  For anyone in the San Diego area, give Lakeside Bakery Supply a call and they'll hook you up.  Happy baking,

hi Peter, I live here in SD and just ventured out Lakeside Bakery Supply. I should have called first perhaps, but the prices have really gone up! $37 for the 50 lb bad now. Do you know something I don't?

Prices have changed in the past 6 years.  And not for the better, sadly.

Wow, yes, I was prepared for a little inflation considering it is an old post but wasn't expecting over double! I only bought the one 50 lb. bag so I am pretty sure there is a cheaper rate if you buy more (it is a wholesaler after all). Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that, as a walk in, I didn't get the same price as a regular... Still 74 cents a pound isn't bad for organic unbleached bread flour.

Peter,

I just bought 50 Lbs. of organic Giusto's at People's for more than $50!  When this batch runs out, I may try Lakeside again.  I went there a few times when it was Lakeside Poultry Ranch.  Even with $6 or more in gasoline costs, it would be much cheaper than People's.
