Hello from another newcomer

Hello to all on this website and many thanks for your support of new bakers.

I am a home baker living in the UK. I came to this site via a search on sourdough starters so made a few posts before I realised there was an introduction board. I have to say I have received good support already, particularly with respect to nurturing my starter.

I love to cook fresh preferably organic food for friends and family and am currently trying to extend my baking skills by baking more artisan style breads. I made a start with the French-style Master Boule recipe from 'Artisan Baking in Five Minutes a Day'. I found this to be a good, straightforward recipe for a beginner, but one that also allowed me to try some new techniques, including shaping a boule, baking on a preheated surface and using steam. It gave me confidence to use a recipe that yielded quite a nice loaf on my first venture, one that had reasonable oven spring with a good crust and acceptable crumb. It also tasted so much better than shop bought bread. There was much generous but also slightly covetous debate about who would have the last slice! (Pictures below).

I know there are many more bread recipes to try and am now keen to move on to explore other bread types, including sourdough and different traditional styles, British as well as continental.

As someone new to artisan baking it is so good to have an online forum like this in which to share successes and problems. Much better than being alone staring at the dough or starter thinking 'Is this right?'. I also look forward to trying recipes and techniques suggested by more experienced members.

a newcomer, but you can't call yourself a beginner; not with an introductory loaf a nice as that one.  No doubt there was lively debate over that last slice, and well deserved it was.  I think I'd like some of those preserves myself.  Warmest greetings to you from a "colonist"!

Dear OldWoodenSpoon,

Many thanks for your warm welcome and encouragement! Seriously, this was my first artisan loaf - I just think it's a good recipe to start with! I have had some experience baking tin loaves and potato bread but a while ago so I am excited to return to baking. I can see from the site that there is a lot more to discover. Just checked your blog and sourdoughs - wow! Would like to bake sourdough when my starter stabilises. As for the preserves, they were great but I can't lay claim to them. They were made by a lovely lady called Susie from her family orchard. Greetings to you in California.
