King Arthur Sir Lancelot

I've been trying for about a year to buy KASL in Houston.  The only distributor here is Dawn, and when I called them they said they did not carry KASL.  A week back, a Dawn salesman called me back, and said they do indeed carry KASL.  However, they do not do cash-and-carry, so I had so set up an account, which took about a week.  I finally got to place an order a couple of days ago.  I was told that their minimum order was $75, but they let me slide on the first order, so I got a 50 lb bag, and have made bagels and pizza so far.  Very nice!  If anyone else in the Houston area wants some KASL, let me know, and maybe I can get enough takers to hit the minimum next time.  I'm in no hurry: it will take a while to get through 50 pounds.

Andy,

That's a good price, $1.50 per pound. I remember reading somewhere that KASL is exactly the same as their consumer-branded unbleached bread flour. Can anyone confirm this?  It typically goes for around $1.75-2.00/pound around here, so if they are the same, then it's a good deal.

** EDIT: I take that back. KASL has a higher protein number than KABF, so they are indeed different products. I was thinking of a different flour. **

Plus, I don't think the post is actually saying what the price was for the bag of flour. Couldn't/shouldn't have been near $1.50/pound. Probably not even .50/lb on a pick up basis.

is what you were probably thinking of.  In 5lb packages it's marketed as their unbleached AP flour.

I didn't mention the priced, but it was $22.31 for 50 lbs, or about $0.45 per pound.  This is certainly a whole lot better than buying the 3 lb bags online.

.....Sir Lancelot four (50#) is only $18.50 if you pick up and pay cash at Goldberg & Solovy in Vernon.  That's $0.37/pound. They have a $100 minimum order so I usually buy staples there, like canned tomatoes, etc, when I buy flour.

Still working my way through the 50# bag I bought in January.

Does anyone know where I can buy Sir Lancelot flour 50lb in Cleveland?  I've spent most of the morning searching the web and cannot find anything.

thanks!

One avenue to investigate is Dawn Food Producs (dawnfoods.com)  I believe they have an office in Cleveland.  In some cities they'll do cash-and-carry.  In others, you have to set up an account.  The King Arthur site lists its distributors, and you can find out from them who handles your area.

Cool, thanks!  I'll give them a try.  I looked on a nother site and I found a place in P.A. but by the time you add deliver, the cost was 22-25$ for 50lb + 30-40$ for delivery.  Still cheaper than ordering directly from KA.

Sam-

Have you tried contacting a bakery that sells bagels?  Chances are good they use Sir Lancelot, and if you ask, they may be willing to sell you a 50# bag for the price they pay for it.

That's how I buy my Sir Galahad flour - from a local restaurant.

Thanks for the info Larry!  I'll have to check into that.   Giant Eagle had KA on sale this week for $3.65 per 5lb bag.  Needless to say I went and picked up 10 bags of bread flour :), so that should hold me for a little while.

Sam, Sidari's Italian Foods, 216-431-3344 carries it, I've bought from them. They do cash and carry, just call ahead. They are downtown someone around East 30th St.

Unfortunately, Sir Lancelot is the only KA product they carry. I'm looking for a 50lb. bag of Sir Galahad if anyone can help me.

Hey thanks for the information!!!  I will definitely give them a call.  I have been going down to Amish country (Walnut Creek) to get it.  They have the flour as well as other products dirt cheap.  I have purchased KA SL for .59 per #, pretty reasonable.  Very good selection of all types of flours (rye, spelt, wheat, etc).  The spices are extremely inexpensive.  1.00 ea. for 3-4oz (volume) for garlic powder, cumin, rubbed sage, etc.  But I will definitely head over to Sidaris to buy the flour there!

Andy,

Euro-Mid Products in the west Heights sells KASL in 50# bags.  The most recent price list I have lists it at $18.98 for 50#.  They sell to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays; I would call for specific hours.  You will need to place an order a day ahead so that they have your product ready for you.  They are located at the intersection of W 12th and Seamist in the 77008 zipcode.  I believe their minimum order is $50.  I am looking for organic high gluten flour in 50# bags, so if you have a source for that, I'd appreciate it!  Best of luck - Rosemarie

Rosemarie,

Thanks for the tip.

I stopped by Euro-Mid earlier today to get a price list on their flours.  They said they'd email it to me.  I'm curious to see what they carry in addition to KASL.

arrived at the local Mennonite store.  Had to buy food grade buckets at Lowes and proper air-tight Gamma lids from www.ebaytec.com

I happened to look through my BBA book and noticed that there are several really great bread ideas which call for this high gluten flour.

Anyone with some advice on what ingredients to add/shy away from when working with this high gluten flour ?

Thanks all,

Anna

Hello,

I just completed my purchase of a 50 lb. bag of King Arthur Sir Lancelot Flour at Dawn Food Products here in Kansas City. I called and explained I was a local home baker and they took my name and said somebody would call me back. A short time later a sales rep called back and confirmed they did indeed sell to amateur bakers like me.

I just needed to call my order in within the time frame of their daily operational hours and was able to pickup the next day. The 50 lb. bag of Sir Lancelot flour was $20.91, very nice deal! I also purchase a 50 lb bag of King Arthur Whole White Wheat flour. It was $34.68, not as great a deal as it is more readily available in smaller bags at area groceries in the Kansas City area.

The Kansas City Dawn Food Products phone is 800-452-3296

A good resource for us Kansas City bakers!
