purity of vital wheat gluten

I am just starting out, and looking for a good source for vital wheat gluten for personal and small business uses.  I want to be SURE the vital wheat gluten that I purchase does not have MELAMINE in it .. ( the protein enhancer from china that was found in pet food and OUR food that killed or sickened so many).  Can anyone help me with some sources?

I've used Bob's Red Mill products for many years and have always been completely satisfied with them.  BRM produces vital wheat gluten that I use in my baking.  King Arthur Flour probably also has gluten.

BRM and KAF are my main sources for baking ingredients.

Good luck!

thank you for the response.  i guess i need to know about how vital wheat gluten is made and then ask the producer if they add any protein enhancer to their vital wheat gluten that comes from china.

Welcome to TFL, newatthis

If you are new to bread baking, why are you even contemplating using vital wheat gluten?

There are excellent high-gluten flours available commercially, which are milled in the U.S. and are unbleached and unbromated.

What do you plan on baking?

thanks for your response.  i plan on making bread and breadsticks from the Healthy Bread in 5 minutes cookbook.  It calls the vital wheat gluten in their basic recipe.  Do you know of a source that is located in the U.S. that For Sure does not add any protein product from china to their vital wheat gluten?

Arrowhead Mills sells organic flours and carries VWG.  King Arthur Flour and Bob's Red Mill, as mentioned above, also carry it.

While these companies are very reputable, none of us can attest to what's contained in any product on the market, so your best bet is to contact a customer rep at each company's website:

 KAF

Arrowhead Mills

Bob's Red Mill

Each company has a website store.

Happy baking...

Arrowhead Mills says they do not put anything from china in their product.  i have not heard from the other two yet....i don't think they will respond.  thank you for your help.

Have you tried your local health food store?  I use VWG to make seitan and I get mine from Planet Organic (a health food store).  They in fact grind their own wheat; their label indicates nothing but gluten as ingredients.
