This website is awsome!! Eating homade bread is the best thing in the world. The bread I made before finding this website was junk, but now I'll give my bread away to anybody willing to eat it and feel proud. I've started the sourdough starter listed under "handbook" and everything happened as written. Its the 8th day , but on the 6th day it started smell beerey. About 30 min after I feed it it smells kinda nutty but as the day goes on it gets back to beerey. Is this normal?

feeding the starter
Today I fed my sourdough starter, but forgot to throw out half of it first!! Have I ruined it, or can I save it by throwing out, and refeeding?
Feeding the Starter
As long as you have enough room for expansion, nothing has been damaged by not tossing half of the starter. If you find that you do not have enough room, then go ahead an remove some, but use it for pancakes, or something similar, rather than putting it in the trash. Your best move would be to make some bread or rolls with the extra.
Feeding the Starter
As long as you simply fed the starter flour and water, it should be fine. The yeast will continue to do its thing and your only problem will be the quantity of starter in your container. If you've got a healthy, vigorous starter, it will be able to survive this and much worse before it gives up the ghost. If you're feeling anxious about the starter, watch your starter for activity such as bubbling or a doming top and then follow normal feeding procedures. As has been said before on this site, starters are capable of withstanding neglect and abuse and will revive after a feeding or two.
Take care of your starter. Don't be a slave to it.
