Submitted by althetrainer on July 12, 2009 - 6:13pm My starter tells me summer is hereWe went on a 4-day vacation and I left my starter in the fridge. Came home today and took it out for feeding and guess what I found? Hooch! I fed it immediately... checked the bowl 3 hours later, to my surprise, there was hooch in the bowl again! Despite of the fact that I liked a high hydration starter, I had never seen my starter that hungry since we live in the great white north and temperatures usually stay on the cold side. I have just fed it again but I have a feeling that I will have to do a third feed before going to bed. I don't mind because I will be having a lot of extras to make pancakes and muffins! LOL

surprised by the Hooch?
Hi. Just out of curiosity, why were you surprised about the hooch? Isn't that normal? I get it a lot.

It would be normal if I had left it out in a warm kitchen but I had it in the fridge the whole time. We live in an area where our summer is mild and our kitchen is cool so it usually takes much longer for the hooch to form. It was the timing that threw me off.
