Hi from a young baker!

Hello everyone,

I am a soon-to-be college graduate, which I gather from poking around here a bit, probably makes me one of the younger members of this community. Because I decided to take a very light courseload my last semester, I have found that I have LOTS more free time than I am used to having so I've found myself spenginh increasing amounts of that time baking.  I am fortunate enough to go to a school that has lots of eating cooperatives (co-ops) (essentially student-run dining halls that focus on local/organic foods and making things from scratch) From growing up in a family that cooks a lot, and spending a lot of time cooking and baking in the co-ops, I've gleaned a far amount of kitchen-knowledge.  I even had a brief stint as bread-maker for my co-op.  Although I wasn't really brave enough to attempt more complicated forms of bread baking such as using starters and sponges, I did learn a few tricks about shaping.  (and got a lot of experience dealing with massive amounts of dough - enough to make 10-20 loaves at a time) Anyways, now that I have more time, I'm enjoying experimenting with baking in my kitchen and I'm pretty pleased with the result.  I'm currently munching on my very first loaf of bread make with an overnight preferment, and I must say I'm pretty pleased with the result, although the shaping of my loaves still leaves something to be desired.  I hope that once I graduate and have to go live in the real world i'll still be able to find time to continue with my baking experiments.

You aren't alone

It's encouraging to hear that I'm not the only one from that age group that is into artisan baking and goes to this forum.  I'm about to be a college graduate myself.  I started a couple years ago with simple stuff and kind of worked my way up to sourdough and some of the more complicated preferment based breads.  It's a lot of fun, the real shame is there are few people our age that are interested in or knowledgeable about the subject.

My son and very soon to be

My son and very soon to be daughter in-law love to cook and bake.  They have not dove into the whole bread baking thing yet, but are wanting to.  I bought them their first bread cookbook and for a wedding gift they are getting a mixer, starter/sour dough I have worked on over the past few months and some of my favorite recipes...oh, and a beauitulf retro apron.

I'm so excited to have others in the family that enjoy baking as much as I do.

So good for you for starting young.  It's addictive and I'm sure you will go through seasons of your life when you have very little time to bake, but you will always have the foundation and find your way back to it.

Enjoy!

Nora

I am 23 and graduated college

I am 23 and graduated college last year.  I started using yeast almost 3 years ago and have loved every loaf so far... including the super dense baguettes that were turned into the best chocolate raspberry bread pudding!  I have baked my whole life and am more addicted to bread baking than I ever thought I could be.  It is nice to get my baking fix and not be left with a week worth of cookies, brownies, or cake to eat.  The bread bakers apprentice and cooks/baking illustrated, including this site have really helped me and fed my bread baking cravings!  I am the only person I know who isn't  twice my age who knows how to or likes to make bread.  Glad to know there are others out there.

thanks! I'm glad to know I'm

thanks! I'm glad to know I'm not alone on this thread.

Lots of people of a wide

Lots of people of a wide range of ages are into artisan bread baking, so you are not alone in this or other bread baking forums. Have fun!
