i have wanted to make this for so long but i do not know how to braid, is there an easy way to do this and a good recipe? maybe even a kosher one?
You Tube has a bunch of videos on how to do this, e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR6aIAh2Vt8
there's a wonderful recipe and explanation at Smitten Kitchen.
Braiding is easy just divide the dough into three parts and than roll into long cord. Pinch the 3 ends together and than braid alternating the cords.
Any challah recipe would be kosher as long as it doesn't contain milk so that it's parev. It's all about the ingredients.
Here's a good video for making six breaded challah. Don't be intimidated. Just practice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22p3wIHLupc&feature=related
Hamelman's book _Bread_ has a nice formula and very clear braiding instructions, with several variations. You can see a few challahs I made following his directions, including 2 triple-deckers, at http://picasaweb.google.com/louiscohen2006/Culinary
I have a trick. For three and four strand braids, I find it's easier to start braiding challah from the middle. Braid from the middle to one end, then rotate the baking sheet so that you can braid the other side from middle to end. If you start at one end, your challah is more likely to be misshapen.
There are lots of videos out there. If you search "sweet vanilla challah" here, you will find a very impressive round braided challah which was actually quite easy to shape using clear pdf instructions.
Have fun! Passover starts this week so I can't bake any more bread for aout 10 days or so. Boo hoo! I'm already having withdrawal!
