San Francisco
Hi all,
I'm new a new member but have been using this website and baking bread for over a year. I'm living in Singapore which is a bit of a desert in terms of artisan baking. The wife and I are planning a holiday to the US in April including about 4 days of exploring SF. I'm extremely excited to be visiting such an important baking city. I was wondering if you could recommend a few key bread places for us to visit. Just two or three will be plenty. My wife won't let me distract her from shopping for very long.

With pleasure... I lived in SF for about 5 years, now I am in Cyprus for about 2 years, and likewise, Cyprus is not so good with artisan bread baking. So, I end up creating my own breads at home.
Anyway... here are some places to try:
Hope this helps. Enjoy SF!

I've had bread from Tartine and thought it was really suberb. The place is really busy, so make sure you get there early. --Pamela
Have not been there yet, but have read great reviews about it. If you would like to get an idea what they offer, check their website or take a look at their cookbook. http://www.tartinebakery.com/
At the book signing at Omnivore books yesterday, Peter mentioned some pizza places he had visited on this trip.
Pauline's, Delfina Pizzeria, and Pizzaiolo in Oakland. There was a fourth one too, but I don't remember what it was. I'm trying to find out. If I do, I'll post it later.

Hmmm... pizza! Another small pizza gem in San Francisco is Pizzetta 211 (http://www.yelp.com/biz/pizzetta-211-san-francisco). And please do not forget DOPO in the East Bay- a small Italian restaurant with Sicilian dishes and their pizzas are definitely a hit (I had the privilege to bake some of them!).

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions.
I'm really looking forward to searching them out. I'll post a reply with my impressions once I've come back from the holiday.
