happy fornicalia

February 17, 2013 - 6:01am -- JoshuaFinancial

February 17 was the Roman festival of fornicalia,  dedicated to Fornax,  the Roman goddess of ovens.  Bakers draped garlands over the mouths of their ovens,  prayers and offerings were made to ensure a prosperous wheat crop. ( Hamelman Bread 2nd ed. p 38)

While I am far from pagan, I found it amusing and wonderful and appropriate that there should be a holiday specifically built around ovens,  bread,  and the bakers who love them.

Morning in the Ozarks

October 10, 2010 - 5:23am -- Grayfox

Hello, greetings from the Missouri Ozarks.  Watching the mist rise from the lake...the sun hasn't come up yet.  I just came on board here because the breads look good, and because I never met a baker I didn't like.   I've been making bread for quite a few years, but there's always more to learn.  The object is to stay healthy and happy, and good bread does that.

May I introduce myself?

Good afternoon, The Fresh Loaf,

First I would like to thank you all, as so many seem to have before me, for this incredible resource. I have ended up here many times over the last year, as my tentative first attempts at basic yeasted loaves snow-balled into my current sourdough obsession, and I felt it was time to become a fully-fledged member. The sense of warmth, and community is really very touching, and I look forward to benefiting from the experience and kindness you all seem to possess in abundance.

Howdy from Oregon

Good to see so many people making their own bread.  I've been baking since my kids were young & now they're both over 40.  So have made a lot of great things & had a lot not so good. lol  Recently tried the Art bread in 5 & having fun with it. I'm usually kind of chatty, so hope it doesn't bother anyone. ;)  Looking forward to learning a lot from the rest of you, & if I can help please let me know.
