Durability of mixers

Yesterday I was making a batch of Kolaches and the dough was being kneaded in my Cuisinart mixer. I was busy making the apricot filling. When I wasn't looking, my mixer "walked" off the edge of the counter crashing to my tile floor. My first words were not "Oh Golly". The top came off, the front door came off and it unplugged itself. I put it back together, plugged it in and it worked just fine. No damage! Remarkable! I know many of you use Kitchenaid mixers and I hope they are as durable. Does anyone have stories of "walking mixers" or how to prevent them from doing it?

Lastly, how do you pronounce Kolache?

Is it: Ko-lach, Ko-LACH-key, Ko-LACH- ee, Ko-lach-cha. Perhaps it depends on your nationality.

Is there a difference in speed settings between home mixers? Most instructions say "Mix on low speed (#2 if using a KitchenAid)"

Is there a difference in speed settings between home mixers? Example: instructions say "Mix on low speed (#2 if using a KitchenAid)", at least most of the books that I have mention KA. I am following instructions now which say KA, waiting between mixing and I had a "hmmmm" moment.

I have a home model Cuisinart and I use the same settings in the formula's instructions even though most say KA. I think I'm correct using same speed settings as KA but never hurts to double check.

There goes my timer, time to add the whole grains and mix again.

Thanks,

steve

Cuisinart 7 Quart, 1000 Watt, Silver Mixer for Sale -- I'll entertain a best offer!

Hi All,

I'm moving to NYC to a small (but great) loft. My kitchen is going to be much smaller and I need to sell certain things that I don't have room for. First to go, sadly, is my 7 quart Cuisinart, which I love. But, I simply won't have room for it and am going to be able to keep only my smaller KitchenAid. I bought it 6 or so months ago, have posted here about how great I think it is, and it is in perfect condition.

I use all my equipment very gently and carefully. The mixer will include:

1. Mixer body

2. Whisk

3. Paddle

4. Dough hook (has slight "tarnish" which Cuisinart told me is normal)

It does not include to "splash guard," which I disposed of, as I've never used one with any mixer.

Thanks and let me know!

Cuisinart 7 quart stand mixer

Hello all,  I just started baking my own bread about a month ago.  I decided to avoud the whole bread machine route and get a good stand mixer to avoud all that time spent kneading.  So far I have had some great success with my bread, I've been making a whole wheat, oatmeal bread and only about 2 loaves at a time.  I did a bit of reading on the internet and decided to avoid the whole Kitchen Aid thing as it appears that the quality has dropped somewhat in recent years.  After reading reviews I decided that this 1000 W monster that Cuisinart was pushing was the way to go.  I even managed to get a great deal on it, $399 CDN from sears (Normally sells up here for $599 CDN).

Well, I was less than happy.  On my first batch of dough, the mixer would pause for a few seconds and start up again on the lowest setting.  This was dough for two loaves.  I emailed Cuisinart Canada and described the situation to them.  A few days later they sent me a response asking me what the serial number was.  I responded and have yet to hear back from them.  I decided after a few days to call the 1-800 number and they told me to pack it up and take it to the Woodbridge repair centre, (only an hour away from where I am).  After I pointed out that the 9:30 to 5:00 hours were less than convenient they suggested I take it back to Sears.  I did and the new mixer was even more disappointing.  After a morning of use it was leaking grease out of the gear casing.

Anyway, I guess I'm going to take the thing back and have a look on this site to see if there are any better options out there (for less than $1000).  I'd sure appreciate any suggestions.  Until then, Happy kneading.

compare stand mixers: Cuisinart vs electrolux DLX vs Viking

Hi,

I am looking for a good quality stand mixer and I would appeciate if you could share your experience about the Cuisinart 7 quart mixer. Even though cuisinart is better known for its excellent food processors, this machine looks very impressive - a powerful 1000 watt motor with a 5 year warranty, 3 year product warranty and a timer. But surprisingly, there aren't many posts about it. Would someone please share experience regarding this mixer?

Viking and Electrolux DLX are the other two stand mixers on my shortlist. Although they have favorable ratings from many users ( I saw some negative ratings for Viking , though), I would like to know how these two compare with the cuisinart.

I need a sturdy mixer that can handle dough for 6 loaves easily; but I also want it to be able to mix frosting and cake batters that need gentler mixing and folding.

I need the mixer mainly for bread dough. I don't mind mixing the cake batter by hand or with a hand mixer since the quantity is smaller, but it would be nice to have a mixer that can do both the jobs very well.

I am a home- baker so I am not looking for a commercial size mixer.
