a boston brown quick fix

I don't even know what it was I wanted to do; I just ended up fascinated by the fact I had just purchased two tin cans of cookies, and, when flipping open Glezer's book, there was that picture of  that bread sticking out of tin cans; the Boston Brown Bread! So, sometimes if not all the time, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do:

his is a bread that I've seen in every grocery mart I've ever shopped at and although I find the store bought variety somewhat awful I've always been drawn to it. For some reason or another I decided one day that I just HAD to make it. It was after all one of my grandmothers absolute favorites, and although I've never met her I always feel like I do when I make these sorts of traditional New England foods. Its actually steamed in a tin as strange as it sounds its definitely a new england tradition that I adore.

Has anyone made Maggie Glezer's Boston Brown Bread?

I'd like to make Glezer's brown bread. I made Boston Brown Bread years ago and always steamed it, the traditional way. This recipe bakes the bread in the oven. Has anyone tried this, baking it seems like an easy alternative. Also, I quit making this bread because I worried about using the coffee cans...leaded seams??? or whatever. Is this another unnecessary worry? Any suggestions about what to use instead of cans?
