Good source for budget sieve / sifter

January 8, 2021 - 8:09pm -- kylevanhorn

EDIT: I moved this to the Grains and Milling section.

I recently got a Mockmill 100 and wanted to complement that with one or a few sieves. I am also out of storage space for my baking tools, and didn’t want to break the bank. So size and cost were factors as well.

I wanted a low count sieve to start. Something to pull big bran and stray hulls. My local mill starts at #18 mesh, so I looked in that range.

After a lot of back and forth, I decided I liked the 8” models from Vollum. They come in 3 mesh sizes, #20, #30, and #50, which is about what I want.

True Grain Artisan Milling - New Chicago-based Mill

January 6, 2021 - 2:18pm -- Benjamin Holland

Hello all,

I haven't been too active here in a while, but I used to come here all the time to learn about home milling. Several years ago I became obsessed with milling my own flour, meeting local grain farmers, and learning everything I could about artisan bread flour milling.

Beginner question: mimicking different types of flour

January 1, 2021 - 3:17am -- francisaugusto

Hi there,

I came to develop an interest on home mill because I was started to be frustrated with the lack of flour variety in Norway, where I live, or, if I can put it better, with the lack of variety of flours I'd like to use. To find a simple type 1 flour is not easy, and I would like to experiment with some Swiss flours.

Then, while reading about it, I realised that home flour milling is a lot about the nutrition side of it, so I got that.

I understand that home milling requires a lot of experimenting, and also requires a change on recipes.

Can komo mio grind fine flour in one pass?

December 29, 2020 - 9:07pm -- shelmica

I have had a Nutrimill for years but am looking for a second mill because I'm tired of having to clean it out to do gluten free, I still love wheat and bake a lot of sourdough, but husband needs gluten free, severe allergy.  I'm interested in the Komo mio mainly because it would have the option of the additional gluten free stones if I decide it is less hassle than the Nutrimill, which works great but is a pain to clean.

Handmilling fine flour

November 26, 2020 - 9:10am -- vangoghbread

Hello,

Recently joined and enjoyed browsing the forum for helpful information. I would like to mill my own flour. I decided that I want a hand mill to achieve this goal. In my research I really like the

SAMAP (https://www.samap-eco.fr/en/moulins/handmill-hand-mill-SAMAP/)

or

Salzburger (https://natural-grainmills.com/handmills/).

Nutrimill Broke, Fixed it Myself

November 25, 2020 - 6:26am -- texasbakerdad

I thought someone might find this useful.

My wife was milling some hard white wheat the other day. On the second batch of berries, she went to turn on the mill and it wouldn't work. I had heard that Nutrimill has a great warranty, so I called them and the lady I talked to was really nice. I admitted that I had received the Nutrimill used as a gift from my grandfather and she informed me that my Nutrimill was no longer eligible for free warranty repairs.

Help! Mill & MIx motor stopped

November 23, 2020 - 11:59am -- sjum

Hi All,

Yesterday I was grinding Kamut when my motor started making a different sound.  I turned it off and then tried to turn it back on and nothing happened.  The motor was hot so I let sit overnight and tried again today and to my dismay, it is not working.  I'm devastated.  I've never had a problem before. Did I overwork my 'Millie'?  I'm hoping it can be fixed.  Any advice?  She's a workhorse so I'm surprised.  I thought there might a fuse that tripped but I don't see anything.

Thanks in advance!

Susan
