Milling Gluten Free grains

May 31, 2016 - 11:20am -- TheBajan

Hello,

I purchased a Retsel Mil-Rite electric grain mill with the optional hand crank and the optional stainless steel grinders. Three weeks ago I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I've never used the mill even though I've had it for about 4 years... I've never even turned it on. Looking at the cost of purchasing GF flours (rice, coconut, almond, various beans, etc.) I'm blown away at how much it costs. So I'm thinking about using the mill to create my own flour.

grinders and blenders

May 14, 2016 - 7:29am -- chleba

Hi:

I've looked into milling my own wheat for a while just for fun home purposes, this sort of "do it myself" attitude is predominant in all my hobbies.

Google searching results really in only reviews of the basic home machines, like the nutri or wonder mills, some of the hand cranked ones, etc.  Here and there I see a little note about using something like a vitamix or blendtec.   So a few questions where I'm not finding much:

Sifitng, milling, hard bits ect

i have a Nutribullet which i am using for me sourdough starter milling. i  also have a blendtec but havent tried it yet, i think it needs an attachment.  i am planning to make wheatberry, speltberry and some rye breads. ialso want to try french type all purpose flour but i think this is more expensive than buying berries and there is no way to make it?

Marathon Uni-mill

April 27, 2016 - 5:55pm -- shebelzidar

Greetings Bread Bakers

I've had a MARATHON UNI-MILL for about thirty years.  It works great but I accidentally

melted the funnel tray and hopper drawer in my oven while drying them.

Does any one have these parts or know where I can find them?  It seems a shame

to get a newer mill when this one is a perfectly-working stone mill.

Holly (aka Shebelzedar).

Interchangeability of test sieves

April 7, 2016 - 12:21pm -- chriswrightcycles

All,

I'm ready to add a handful of test sieves to my collection, and in a effort to save some cash I plan on sourcing these second hand on eBay. Can anyone here speak to the compatibility of test sieves from various manufacturers. For instance, can I pair a 12" VWR sieve with a 12" Tyler sieve?

Does anyone here mix and match like this?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

motorizing a grainmill help

March 21, 2016 - 8:36am -- carolinagirl58

my Grainmaker 99 will arrive before too long and I want to figure out the motor thing pretty quickly.  I want to be able to adjust the speed.  Is that even possible?  I would like to grind flour slowly, but want the ability to speed up when I grind grain for animal feed.  Country Living sells a nice motor that I believe would work fine on a grainmaker, but it limits me to 60 rpm.  would a motor speed controller of some sort on a stronger motor do the job? thanks

Problem with the Wondermill Jr. Deluxe

March 19, 2016 - 10:25pm -- Most Motorcycle...

I bought a wondermill deluxe jr, constructed a bicycle work station, and with it i can make peanut butter and wheat flour no problem, but each time i've tried to make corn flour by grinding popcorn kernals, the mill self tightens itself to the point that it seizes up and threatens to destroy the machine if i don't pay attention.  On no other ingredients so far have i had this problem of the grinding stones self-tightening.  Do any others have a similar experience, and any recommendations and solutions?

Need help pricing Grainmaker 116

March 16, 2016 - 11:30am -- Downsizing Senior

Hi, everyone.

My wife and I are organizing for a "retirement move" to a place where we just won't have room for our mill.  We'll be very sad to give it up, but that's life.

The mill is a GrainMaker 116 with motor and flywheel/crank.

We've had it for about two and a half years (I'm sure Bonnie, at GrainMaker has the exact date on file) and used it, on average, to mill 4-5 cups of flour every week.  Occasionally I would use the mill twice in a week, sometimes it would sit for several weeks without milling anything, and now and then I would use it to make cornmeal.
