Book reviews, book recommendations, questions about books, etc.
Congrats to Peter Reinhart, who won the James Beard book award for his latest book, Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads.
I am very excited about this and my wife just doesn't seem to share my excitement so I thought I would post it here. I got a hardcover copy of Maggie Gleezer's Artisian Baking book today at half price books for just $10 today. As I said I figured some of you here would share my excitement in such a great find so I thought I would post.
I got all the ingredients to make the Sullivan Street Potato Pizza today but didn't have time to swing by the library for a copy of the recipe. I looked it up on this site; there's just a recipe for the dough, not the topping. Can anyone help? Thanks!

This book sounds very interesting, I've been searching for it on the internet over the last couple days and it appears to be out of print and copies are going for well over $100.
Does anyone have a copy of this book they are no longer using and would like to sell it? Give me a shout or respond to this post if you do, we can work something out.
thanks

"Advanced Bread and Pastry, A Professional Approach" by Michael Suas
I received the book this week.
They are not kidding about the word "Advanced". If you want to use this book you very much need to have some baking background (probably more than i have), and you must read the sections on techniques before doing any of the recipes.
I haven't read enough to comment extensively, but I will give a couple of examples:
Got the Maggie Glazer book "A Blessing of Bread" today, Tue April 15, 2008, new hardcover for $9.99 (CND)! Woot!
Has anyone heard anything about the Michael Suas book? Amazon.com is telling me that it is having trouble getting it. The original publication date was April 4.

Peter Reinhart's Wholegrain Breads
or
Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day
I own and use a grain mill but also like white loaves. I already have Laurel Robertsons' book, the KA Wholegrain |Baking book and The Handmade Loaf.
Please help me decide!!!
Has anyone made anything from this book? I checked it out of the library and made the sourdough. I'm very unimpressed. Those who've tasted it say it has a nice sour flavor followed by a strange after taste. I think it seems like the flour was stale- which I know it isn't since I'm still using it without the problem elsewhere. I followed the recipe exactly, so I don't think I want to try the others in the book.

I realize it's not specific to bread, but I just wrote a review of “The Chocolate Cake Sutra” by Geri Larkin here: http://jeremyskitchen.wordpress.com/2008/03/21/the-chocolate-cake-sutra/ It's pretty brief, but I figured anyone interested in pastry and baking in general might like it. Note: don't buy this book until you've had a chance to look at a copy of it. It's not really a cookbook, so much as a social commentary.
