"A new law will lift restrictions on the sale of home-cooked treats and impose sanitation and labeling requirements on the burgeoning cottage food trend.

Gov. Jerry Brown announced Friday that he signed AB1616, known as the Homemade Food Act. The Democratic governor described it as one of several bills that will “make it easier for people to do business in California.”

I've been thinking about writing this post for the past week. If anyone is at all offended by it, flag it and Floyd will remove it. I'm just too proud not mention it to this community I'm a small part of, wherein I've made many virtual friends.

I've written a novel. It's hard Science Fiction.  I tried publishing it in the old-fashioned way, but reaped only agents' rejection letters. I've self-published it with Amazon Kindle.

If you're interested, visit http://www.JonKromer.com. The first three chapters are available to read.

Alkali for making noodles

Hi,

This is my first post here.  I was drawn here by doing a search on Kansui Water in Google.  I've been trying to find a suitable Alkali for including in a dough recipe to make Hand Pulled Noodles aka La Mian.  In China they use a compound called Peng Hui which is some kind of Ash.  It's not available in Europe so I'm looking for an alternative.  Would anybody here have  any suggestion for an alternative which would act on the dough gluten and make the dough more 'stretchy' and indeed hold together better when boiled?  Thank you for any replies.

WA Cottage Food Act - Anyone doing it?

Pretty much as the topic says.  Washington state finally passed a Cottage Food Act, but it's a very long process with heavy restrictions. Regardless of this and the fact that the amount of money that can be made is small, I am considering  going through with this, as I need another source of income.   I will be potentially getting a pretty huge paycut in 4 months which would endanger my living situation.

I saw this in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the local newspaper for Santa Cruz county. Thought folks here might be interested to read a little bit about Ortiz's biography.

I am flipping out! I knew I shouldn't have purchased another Kitchenaid the newer models have such lousy motors! But because I can not pay over a grand for the Hobart I wanted ...I settled for a KA and lit caught fire on Sunday after just a year of use! I use it daily but to be honest it is not " heavy" use, because I am a sourdough baker nothing I do requires a lot of mixing...and all I use it for is bread!

Doing the warrantee dance now and of course can not find the receipt.

hoping to get some resolve, repair is out of the question I imagine.

This is currently causing great upset for UK Food Manufacture: forever in denial, of course, and oh, so upset about "Auntie" getting in there with her left-wing bias.

Anyway; further support for Eric, as Lustig is prominent in here, so too Professor Marion Nestle, who is much respected by Professor Tim Lang who heads up the Food Policy dept. at City Uni whose programme for the MSc in Food Policy I am currently studying.

Non-GMO Foods

I contacted Bob's Red Mill this week to ask about their policy on selling Genetically Modified Foods (GMO). As you may know, Monsanto and other giants in the herbicide/seed/fertilizer industry have made a play to control the corn and soy markets. The have genetically modified for example, corn so that the worms that eat the corn will die after eating the roots or kernel.
