long handled wood bread peels. Where to buy...

I built a 42" wood fired oven for pizza & breads. Now I need a wooden peel, long handled (60" or so) with a longer head than a pizza peel generally has, and that is squared off and not rounded. I am willing to makle one too. Where can I find/buy such a peel, or what kind of woods are peels generally made of? Almost everything I have seen on the Internet is short handled,or rounded or the head (is that what it's called?) is also too small. I am making baguettes at least 18" long and I'd like to make them longer still. And I'd like to be able to fit four or so on the peel at once. The oven door is 19" wide. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I've seen them at two local restaurant supply companies and they are very reasonably priced--no shipping charges to boot.

Thanks. FBM is closer (NJ. I'm in NY) and both seem to be exactly what I want. It seems I'd need the board and the separate handle. As for restaurant supplky places none near me have anything like it. Just shorter handled affairs for the standard size oven. But I think my search is over now. This will definitely help me manage oven floor space better. Thanks.

http://www.Fornobravo.com has a very nice assortment of pizza peels.  You might be wanting the long handled one with the little round end for turning your pizza's in the oven...it comes very handy.  They also have the square ones and bubble poppers.  For a very hot oven when making pizzas I use the metal ones in the oven..the wood ones and get scorched easily.  I use all of mine.

Sylvia,

I have all the pizza equipment. And I got some from Forno Bravo. Others were from FGPizza www.fgpizza.com. The plans for the oven I built came from Forno Bravo too and their forum helped trmendously. I cannot recommend them enough.

I just placed an order for the peel with FBM. We'll see...

Here is one that I found! It's a detachable 48" peel, but you could always make a different handle easily to use for the paddle. I just want to tell you I AM JEALOUS! I have wanted a brick oven for the longest time!

That one is close. But not big enough. I already ordered one earlier today which looks like it'll fill the bill.

Now, about your oven lust, "nothin' to it but to do it..." Unless where you live would make it unfeasable.  Otherwise, I have to say Forno Bravo's plans and support through the forum is invaluable. And you can pace it all according to budget. Mine took me the from late spring to early fall to complete. Did it 100% by myself (save the support on the forum) and I have to say I did a pretty good job. I don't mind if you have a look at my web site & blog. www.hearth2hearth.com and www.hearth2hearth.com/blog

MARINE PLY  is pretty good for making peel heads, and there is a good chance when you explain what you want it's for, that a boat builder will have los of offcuts at little or no cost and the promise of a loaf or 2 can even result in a shaped head with bevel and all custom made to your requirements. there are some good thick dowels available at harware shops  too ( curtin rods) for handles.

i am about to make a metre long peel head for french sticks for the wood fired oven.

i have used peels that were 20 ft long in my previous life.

Yozza: That might have worked. I live in a town on the Hudson and while I don't know one way or another if there are any boat builders nearby there are plenty of boats. But as I said, I broke down and purchased already. Thanks
