Bread at the County Fair

Happy to say my bread won two blue ribbons and the Scali got a merit award too! Have to admit that there was no other sourdough entered, and it is a small enough fair that nearly everyone gets a ribbon. My sourdough looked pretty sad and it didn't appear to have been cut, but we found a small piece had been removed from one side. All of the other loaves had been cut in half so maybe the judge couldn't get a knife through the crust! A fun experience and I wouldn't be so uptight about it another year. Thanks for all the good wishes, A.

I'd venture a guess that not all the ribbons were blue, though.

I can tell you were disappointed that the judges didn't gobble up your loaves because they were so delicious. (I bet I would have!)

Annie,

Glad to hear you did well at the fair. The fact you stuck your neck out and tried is the mark of a good woman. Way to go!

Maybe your sourdough loaves looked so blue ribbon-worthy they didn't want to cut into it. :)

You should be very proud of yourself though, and I look forward to hearing more about your future bakes!

Thanks so much David, Eric and Jackie. Susan has kindly offered to post pictures if you are interested as I'm the only member of TFL who can't manage to post. And in case I get a swelled head, today I delivered Cardamom Braid loaves to people and didn't find out until I tasted one later that there was VERY little cardamom flavor. How embarrassing. Should I call them and 'fess up or pretend I meant them to be totally bland? A.

Congratulations!

Just when you mentioned that you weren't able to post pictures (or at least if that's what you meant)... for some reason I can't upload them into the file folder thing (not sure how you describe this...), so I created a web blog on wordpress.com just to post pictures on.  Then you can click on them to get the URL and paste into the URL box on here.

If your problem is in any way simaler to mine, I hope this helps!

(and personally I would confess) :)

I can't wait to see photos. It's so nice of Susan to do it for you. One of these days you'll be posting your own pictures.

Congratulations!

Congratulations, Annie!  How much fun that must be to go to the fair and come home with Blue Ribbons!  Glad to hear your Scali did well.  It's one of my favorite breads!

Hi Sylvia, I think it was you who introduced us to Scali? I love it and sometimes make "Nekkid Scali" for friends who can't eat seeds. My last batch was an experiment - I made the starter after lunch and finished the dough late that night and put it into the refrigerator. Took it out early in the morning to warm up, shaped and baked and it was excellent. Nice to know it is so forgiving, A.

Hi Betty, I am so grateful to Susan for posting the pictures, but I won't be able to get the ribbons until Monday morning. I did try to get a picture of the Scali in the display case but it was difficult with the reflection from the glass. A.

In Annie's words:  The judges' comments were on the Scali: "Very nice bread tastes great a winner Bring more." Not much in the way of punctuation! On the sourdough (different initials): "Delicious! Very moist, nice chewy characteristic crust."
