Bread slicer

I've been looking for a bread slicer..........you know, one of those wooden doo-dads you put your loaf in and it has the guides on either side for the knife.  I've looked on Amazon.......they have a bunch but look kinda flimsy, or have poor reviews as to the quality.  If anyone has one they really love and recommends, I'd like to check it out.   I don't know anyone that does woodworking of this sort, which would probably be the way to go........a custom job.  :>)

It does get aggrivating that I cannot get the last 3 or 4 slices even when I cut the loaf.

Thanks.

If you don't mind paying the price & have space to spare, this Graef slicer is pretty damn awesome:  https://www.manufactum.com/graef-hand-slicer-a21216/?c=193694  It is crank-powered, so you can cut slowly, all the way down to the last nub of a loaf.

That's way more slicer than I need.  LOL    Just looking for one of those wooden ones.  The plastic ones with the plastic slots look pretty flimsy.  Reviews on the wooden ones are about 50/50 bad-good reviews.  Just wondering what those of you that have something like that would recommend.

Thanks for the link.  It looks like it would do the job if I had lots to slice.

Then there is the "drill into your cutting board and inserting two knitting needles like goal posts into the board" trick.  Shove the bread through and use the needles as guides to slice.

Guess I never thought of that.   :>)  Too obvious.

Hi Anna:

Well everyone has a method to cut bread uniform in size, I use my stainless steel wired cake cutter There are many on the market that are heavy duty enough to cut through rustic breads!   Mine is a DIY version! The closest I can compare too is on Amazon named the bread slicer Elite!

Cheers!

Cinnabon, my biggest problem is I cannot cut anything straight.  Never have been able to, and at my age, probably never will.  Need a plumb line, I guess.  LOLOL

Hi Anna:

Well then lol you may need a bread guide then, to save you cost ,  would check out your local swap meets, thrift stores and Kijiji before buying a new one, always seems to be a few out there that people will sell at a reasonable price..

If you have a handy husband, that is good with a saw, then maybe he can make you one?, it's really not hard to do!  You-tube has many tutorials on it!

Have a great evening!

Is this 2019? She could pick up the saw herself, I would think.

is a Presto we've had for 3? years.  Very hard plastic, 2 lb. 11 oz., not flimsy at all, and very stable on a tile counter.  Inside cutting area 5-1/2" wide x 7-1/2" long.  Slots are 1/2" apart, so cut as thick as you like.  My husband found it at a garage sale for $2, and it was pristine (no box).  Based on the current Amazon photos our is a bit older (2-tone), but the weight is about the same.  Cuts soft or hard loaves, bagels or soft breakfast rolls just fine.  It can get a little dirty at the front end if you have fruit or a cinnamon swirl in the bread, but washes easily.

My camera is charging and the light is low, but tomorrow I'll post our more compact wood slicer.

Yeahhhhh...............probably could "pick up the saw myself"............it's something I choose NOT to do.  I've done so much "man stuff" during my farming life, I'm willing to give that part up.  When the Spousal Unit starts baking, I will pick up the saw.   LOLOL

However, that idea of using a cutting board and making some kind of "slots" is making me think.   I now have enough knowledge to be dangerous.  My kids used to call me "Mom, the mad inventor" back in the farming days.

Well, since you are baking all that good bread for him I would think that he could re-pay the favor right? lol.  Experiments are what keeps things interesting! except if they go wrong!

I have made some contraptions and even took an old electric tooth brush and taped it to my sifter handle! I thought it might work but it wasn't strong enough to vibrate the icing sugar! I have also combined the strangest things to make bread! sometimes I would find  a concoction that was a diamond in the rough, other times It was a disaster!

Once I found a recipe for what they called  "super sourdough bread!" I was curious, so decided to make it! ! It contained anchovies and pickle juice used as the sour....... Don't ever make this! It was the most disgusting bread I have ever had.

The smell in my kitchen wafted old fish and dill! Lol it was gross!  It took hours to air the house out and many generous sprays of Febreze!  When my husband came home from work he asked what was that horrible smell! I told him I was baking!  He right away told me he had a heavy lunch and would skip dinner lol

This lingering smell turned me off of anchovies and dill pickles for months!  The only way to make sourdough sour is honestly using a starter! that concoction cured my curiosity to look any further for a quick alternative to making sourdough bread!  lol

Cheers!

Cindy!

I bought one of the folding bamboo slicers from amazon.  It's too wide.  My bread knife which has a 10 inch blade barely fits between the two opposite slots and when I draw back the knife if comes out of the far slot and is difficult to reinsert.  And it was still difficult to hold the loaf without smashing it, particularly as the loaf grew shorter.  The last couple of slices were difficult.  Thought about cutting it down but then it wouldn't fold and that's was the chief selling point for small storage. Now it just stays in storage so I can't recommend this type unless you have a whacking long bread knife blade like 12 inches at least.
