Recommendations for small electronic kitchen scale

Hi all,

        I have a probably ten year old, small Salter kitchen scale. Recently I have noticed that after I finish dumping ingredients in a container on the scale and it hits the peak,correct weight, the weight starts to go down. It usually stops after 10 grams or so but it's still disconcerting. Clearly,something is going on with it.

     I am looking for recommendations for a new, small scale. Possibly one with a weighing surface that is connected by a tether to the base so one can put larger bowls on it and see the weight display. Weight display lock feature may be nice. Thanks for any recommendations you may have.

Whether this fits your situation, I don’t know.  But, when I see weight displays drifting from one value to another, it usually indicates fading batteries.  

As to a new scale, I would heartily recommend either the MyWeigh KD7000 or the KD8000.  The first has a 7kg capacity and the latter has an 8kg capacity.  I believe you can also purchase power supplies for either, in case you don’t want to deal with batteries.  The scales feature large weighing platforms, easy-to-see displays, 1 gram sensitivity, and selectable weight units.  Mine, a KD8000, has already outlasted the combined lifetimes of the Salter and Oxo scales that preceded it and I don’t believe that it has required new batteries yet.

I also have had both OxO and Salter scales.  Never liked the Salter (just never seemed to be reliable for me).  My OxO has been used and abused for 10+ years and started getting a mind of its own.  I bought the KD8000 (with the power supply) and have been very happy with it.  Although the only function I use regularly is Tare, never tried the BP functions.  It's considerably taller than the others so if space is a concern check the specs and see if it works in your kitchen.

I only have mine for a few months but I am thrilled with it! It does take up a bit more space than my old scale, but I found it a home.
Edited to add:

 Thanks Old loaf for reminding me about the Bakers % function! I had forgot all about that. I will be scaling my baguette formula for 4 loafs instead of 6. I'll give it a try. (Must look for the manual.) While in the manual I will look into disabling the auto off function also.

OK, now you have me intrigued. I have a scale, (salter I think), and it works fine, but I've always been a bit worried I would mess up my calculations when weighing things. For some recipes, it's in lbs/ozs (HATE THAT), but in some others, it's in grams - so much easier. 

Where I worry is when something says, 2 12 ozs jars of peanut butter. Well, that is 24ozs and my scale will then want pounds and percentage of pound... So, that is one pound and 8 ozs., but that would be 1.4 on the scale (I think?) Can you follow?

Does this scale do it differently? (the Myweigh kd8000)  Especially since my stroke, math is way harder. I can do it, but it's not second nature anymore and I doubt myself.

Berry, there are 5 different weighing modes on the KD-8000: grams/kilograms/ounces/pound & ounces/pounds.

I took a partly used bag of flour and weighed it to come up with the following weights:

  • 1376 g
  • 1.376 kg
  • 48.55 oz
  • 3 lb 0.5 oz
  • 3.034 lb

It's just a matter of pressing the "mode" key to switch between them.  It also has a Bakers Percentage function, but I have never used it.  Hope this helps....

Thanks, I ordered one for myself. I don't NEED it, but as I said, since the stroke, (I'm still under 50, so lots of time for baking and cooking!) working with numbers is difficult and I was having difficulties with this scale BEFORE I had the stroke. I will give it to my adult son who was a math major in college! The KD8000 not that expensive and it will save me a lot of self-doubt and save me from making mistakes!
