Komo mill hopper issue

When I go to screw the hopper back on the mill after using the sifter attachment, it is practically impossible to do so. Are they all like that? Is it because the bottom part of the mill is still hot and has expanded? It comes off easily enough but it’s is always brutal getting it back on. I think I am going to end up with bruises from trying to hang on to the bottom part while trying to turn the hopper!

I am going to wait till the whole thing cools down and see if that makes a difference.

You know Danni, I’ve never unscrewed my Komo. But be careful not to damage anything. The Germans are extremely precise. -disclaimer, I’m half Cajun but my mom was a Steiner :D

Why not give them a call?

Dan

I just bought a WonderMill Junior for bringing oily and wet things. I didn’t know how good we have it. The Komo grinds every gram that I put in it. If I put 26 grams in I get 26 out. Not so with the WonderMill. It uses an auger and a fare amount of whatever is being ground remains in the mill. Bummer... I hope there is a solution for that. I’m spoiled.

Danni, I've had this problem, too.  The problem is twofold:  (1) it's hard to tell the difference between when it's correctly and incorrectly threaded, and (2) when it's incorrectly threaded you can still screw it back on a couple revolutions.

Given that you and I like to using the sifting attachment, we run into this problem frequently.

some of the flour that was stuck between the stones and got to turn it further but it still isn’t where it is supposed to be. I think I am going to get hubby to take out the bottom stone and see if there is flour under the bottom stone. There is no way I should have to force it to get it where the stones are close enough to grind.

Next step if this doesn’t work is to call the place my daughter got it from.

My guess is that it's not threaded properly, not that it's clogged.  My point was that for some reason, even when it's not on the right track, it still turns quite a lot, so you're lead to think that it IS threaded when it's not.

plus I was turning it too far. Hubby tried to take the bottom stone out. Ha ha! No such luck! That thing is in there for life! I just hope we never have to replace the stones!

We tried it without the top stone in and it worked, so we tried it again with the stone in and that’s when he realized that I was cranking it too far. I am so used to fighting with it that I didn’t realize I was doing that. I will mind how I thread it from now on plus watch for flour between the stones after sifting. I find that there is quite a bit left in there after sifting. Is that also the case with you?

Yes, and I'm not sure how much it matters.  I'd rather not fret about it if I don't have to.  If there was an easy, sanitary way to vacuum it out I would, although there's the matter of the tiny springs in the holes of the bottom stone.  Can't lose those.

Danni,  one trick that often works to prevent misthreading is to put item, in this case the hopper, in place and instead of screwing it in, turn it a revolution or two in the wrong direction -  as you do that it should straighten out, then turn it in the right direction.

I will definitely try that! I mill grain once a week and sift each time so this tip will come in handy. Thank you!!!

Hi Danni,

My new mill came with a yellow slip of paper saying that the instructions in the manual for removing the lower stone are incorrect and that the correct removal direction is clockwise.  That may help if you need to remove the stone in future.

I haven’t tried removing the lower stone since way back when, and I have always had the thought in the back of my mind, how are we going to do this if it needs to be done. That stone is on there super tight and I was very afraid of breaking something trying to remove it.  Thank you so much for taking the time to post about this! ?
