Bread slicer

I bake primarily crusty boules.  I love them but they are murder to slice, especially towards the ends.  I'm looking for a knife guide or something with a small footprint, that will make slicing easier (and safer).  I live in NYC and have very limited counter space so a 'deli slicer' isn't really practical.

I've checked Amazon and ordered one but sent it back because it seemed too flimsy.

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas greatly appreciated.

Happy baking.

I find the best way to slice a crusty boule is to cut it into halves first, then lay each half cut side down.  Then you can cut downwards much more easily.  It is still hard to make thin slices with a really crusty loaf by this method, but I like them thickly cut!

Hi Ed, you're describing my current method. Works fine until I get to the edges of the halves. Also I am definitely a thin slice guy.  Somehow it seems a better knife guide shouldn't be that hard to make.

Maybe it will be my mousetrap.

Thanks for the reply.

Maybe an electric carving knife will give you the thin slices you are looking for?

@lenb About 10 years ago when I began baking bread I had the same issue.  I bought all kinds of knives, bread slicer devices et.al.  All of them were worthless.  I finally gave in and bought two cast iron loaf pans and have never looked back.

I've been baking two one-pound loaves in cast iron every 10 days for the last 8 years.  The crust is just as crusty, the bread is just as tasty, the smell of baking bread just as irresistible. Slices fit in any toaster, make excellent sandwiches, grilled cheese, et.al.

Does anyone have positive or negative experience with the bread slicers sold  by bread slicer depot? there are 2 models, one a simple design with L shaped wood, the other with a stainless steel guude.
