My challah burst from oven spring

just made Maggie glezers delicious challah - tastes great but it burst a little in between braids - I know it’s hard to diagnose without image - im thinking that’s because I didn’t weave 3 plaits tightly enough. Does that sound right?

If you were to braid the strands tightly, the challah would tend to look knobby.  If underproofed, the tighter braid would still burst between the braids since that is the softest/weakest point. 

And yes, a picture would help.  :)

I think underproofed too: cold temperature combined with impatient family looking for bread after 3.5 hours of final proof ended up with challah in oven. I’ve never made one so was on unsure ground....here’s pic of half eaten one:
