Sourdough flour

Sourdough flour

I purchased sourdough flour from a local bulk food store.  Yes flour.  I'm not sure how to use it and Google's no help. All recipes include the word 'flour' but hits don't specifically refer to the sourdough.

If someone can suggest a recipe, I'm game. I also have sprouted spelt flour, yes again flour (who knew that wasn't an oxymoron) and AP flour.

A bit new to bread making but love to cook.

Thanks for the help,

Martin

It has dried sourdough in the mix. I believe it's done for flavour only as it recommends adding yeast to recipes. So use it in a regular yeasted recipe for extra flavour.

If you wish to go down the sourdough route you only need flour (regular), water and patience.

1 - 2 weeks to make a starter after which the sourdough world is your oyster.

So, it's dead sourdough or maybe faux-sourdough.  :-)

Thanks Lechem, it didn't occur to search for dry sourdough.

Ingredients say dried sourdough so I assume it's not faux sourdough. Definitely in there just for a sourdough flavour though. If it's just dried you can try to wake it up but I'm not sure how much is in there and it might mean the difference between a six and 2 threes, timewise, "waking" it up. Treat like normal flour with the added benefit of a sourdough flavour.

If you want true sourdough then it's fun to make your own from scratch.

to make some Starter with it.  This is how.  Take 30 g of this flour and add 30 g of water  -stir cover with plastic wrap and let it in a warm place for 24 hours 78 F.  After 24 hours feed it 30 g each of mire of this flour and water and let sot 24 hours on a warm place.  Next day do the same thing.  On day 4 toss half and feed it 30 g of this flour and water. On day 5 feed it 30 more g of flour and water.  By day 6 you either have a good old starter revived or you well on your way to a new one.  Either way you win.

Happy SD Starter Making

for bakeries that don't have the time to make real sourdough and most folks don't and can't tell the difference.

I'm guessing the Safeway "sourdough" is not really sourdough, and made using "sourdough flavored flour" or sour salts.

I haven't tried the Wegmans sourdough yet ... am guessing the same thing, though, based on tasting some of their other breads. Really quite a shame, considering their (very impressive) equipment.
