20160710 Friends from Afar - Ian's Hamburger Buns

Very delicious! Thank you for sharing, Ian!

My friends from the east coast are visiting with their family.  We last saw each other seven years ago and we're all excited about the reunion.  Our kids have grown so much since then, and we, the parents, are getting old...

I spent days to prepare for today's BBQ and I can't tell you how exhausted I am right now.  But it's all worth it because all of us will treasure the memories of our wonderful time together. And I miss them already...

I made Ian's onion hamburger buns for the BBQ...

Very, very delicious buns... My only complaint:  Mine are not as pretty as Ian's...

Asparagus - one of the veggies of our grilled ratatouille...

Finger-licking Mediterranean grilled lamb chops...

Everyone loved it!  I gave myself an "A" ! 

I'm so glad they came out so good!  Sorry if I didn't get back to your questions in time, but looks like you figured it out and I hope they tasted good!  Looks like the rest of your food came out great and I'm sure your visiting friends enjoyed everything!  I know how much work goes into entertaining.  Sounds like you are like my wife and myself in that whenever we entertain we always go crazy cooking and baking which is exhausting but always worth it in the end.

Regards,
Ian

Hi, Ian:

Your answers arrived at the time when I was ready to divide the dough - so the timing was perfect!  The buns turned out very flavorful, and I hope to achieve the texture next time by using the right flours (I used fine semolina in place of durum, and I don't think that's a good idea).  Could you recommend a good online source (with reasonable shipping) for durum flour because I can't find it locally? I've got to give it a try!

I used to entertain a lot more but it gets harder as I'm getting busier and busier.  Everything turned out great yesterday and we all had a good time!

Thank you again for sharing your wonderful bread with us!

Let me give it a try, I'll let you know if it works.

I used to buy from King Arthur but now I mill my own from berries I buy at Breadtopia.com.  They may have the flour as well .

Good luck!

Perfect for your barbecue party and reunion. The lamb chops look awesome! I'm sure they will remember the food and you because of the love you put in them.

I love entertaining too but some people are not very appreciative so I learnt my lesson not to cook for them when they are coming! :) Otherwise I put all of my love and effort, it's a mutual feeling of satisfaction and happiness when the right people are around!

You're absolutely right!  It feels great when entertaining friends who are appreciative!  What kind of party food do you usually prepare?

No party is complete without rice. Mostly Asian food that go well with rice; fried chicken, fried pork belly. kare-kare (beef peanut stew), okoy (savory pumpkin fritters), braised tongue. We don't have a grill unfortunately.

I don't like many guests too, sweet and intimate is my game; around 10-12 people at most. I just like to chat with them casually for long hours so dim sum and sweet snacks that can be prepared ahead of time like cakes, hopia and tarts after the main meal. Many rave about my lemon meringue pie, little do they know that I bake those in my clay pot. :) Don't forget the karaoke!

sound terrific.  The chops looked especially delectable.   Sounds like a lot of fun and catching up at the same time.  The buns look like The King of Rolls made them himself.

Well done and happy baking for old friends

I also prepared Hong Kong style chicken wings but there was already too much food so I didn't grill them.  I was very satisfied with the lamb chops, will do it again soon!  We all had a good time!

Thank you, and happy baking to you, too!

Your parties sound so much fun!  It's very impressive that, at such a young age, you already know so much about food! I only knew how to 煎荷包蛋 at your age!!! :-):-):-)
