Idea to share: Bread and Butter Bar

Because we were hosting our annual holiday party at a friend's apartment (our home is under renovation) we needed to have a limited menu. I've always thought a Bread and Butter Food Truck* would be a brilliant idea, so I decided we should have a Bread and Butter Bar at the party. It was a huge hit. I made 6 types of bread and we had 3 types of butter.

Breads, clockwise from left: Emmer ("Tartine No. 3"), Chestnut ("Sourdough"), Butternut Squash and Cherries ("Sourdough"), Chocolate Chip and Coconut (King Arthur), Oatmeal Porridge ("Tartine No. 3"), and Olive (Adapted from "My Bread"). I was only going to make 5 but my levain looked so lively after making the emmer bread it would have been a shame to waste it.

Butters: cultured salted butter, honey butter and truffle butter. Also had an olive oil dipping sauce and roasted garlic.

Chocolate chip and coconut was the crowd favorite. As was the truffle butter (not homemade). Personal fav: Squash and cherry bread with honey butter.

*Note: I still think this is a good idea and am happy to share it with anyone who wants to test it out!

I have done this a couple times at pot lucks and have also added homemade preserves. Always a crowd pleaser. I have a question about "Sourdough". Is it the new book by Sarah Owens and if so are formulas by weight ? I can't find anything in the reviews on line that indicate how the formulas are presented. Thank you !  c

Thanks, trailrunner!

Yes, formulas are by weight in "Sourdough. None use added yeast. I've made two of the breads so far and after a failed attempted too much local flour, have had good success. I found the chocolate coconut bars (also with sourdough) crumbly, however. Next on the list Harvest Bread with Hard Sauce and Sweet Potato Levain.

Wonderful Idea! Thanks for sharing. I'll be doing this really soon. I also love the simple display along with the popsicle stick identifiers.
