Hello from Arkansas

Hello... I have just found the joy of baking bread. I went on a trip to Alaska. I enjoyed some great sour dough bread there and found a starter I could buy and bring home. I decided to give it a try. So far, I've made two batches. They both came out pretty good but not the quality I enjoyed while in Alaska. I'll save the details for a post specifically about my bread at a later date. I just wanted to share what got me started. Now I'm hooked! My wife is asking about other breads already. I look forward to learning from all of you and hopefully contributing myself in some way.

Happy Baking,

Glad to hear you've had at least some success already! There is a link at the top of the page called Lessons, where you can learn a lot of especially the basics. Since you've already successfully baked a couple times, I'd assume you already know most of it. But I've found there is always more to learn, and even a refresher in things you already know can't hurt either. Also, the Search box at the top right of the screen will lead you to lots of wonderful information on just about anything you need to know about baking, including those "other breads" your wife has been asking about. If you ever do need help, though, don't be afraid to ask. There are some very helpful and knowledgeable people on here!

Thanks David. With so much information available and nice folks to visit with about it, I'm afraid I have stumbled into something that's going to grow into an addiction. :o)

When I first stumbled into TFL, I was just looking to improve my pizza. Now, I can't stand store-bought loaf bread. I make sourdough bread, and I've taught my daughter how to make it. And sourdough is definitely the best for pizza! We use the same dough for pizza that we make for bread.

A few years ago I purchased some very nice organic flour from War Eagle Mill in Arkansas.   They process the grain with an old mill which dates back to Civil War days.   I think it would be fun to see the old water powered mill in operation.   As you get into bread baking, you may want to visit their facility.  You will probably find many fellow bread bakers who will share a cup of their starter with you.      Welcome to TFL….you have found a great website with lots of talented bread bakers.   Happy Holidays!

P.S.  Everybody's starter is 100 years old….at least!  : )
