I Think My Wife's Hobart N50 Is Finally HOT!!

We have had the Hobart N50 for over 20 years, and have baked countless loaves of bread, so it seemed time to :restore" the outside of it.

The machine was purchased used, and was engraved "US Army"

The machine was acquired with a burned out motor, and I had a local motor shop rewind it, the entire inside was gone through at that time, mostly cleaning and re-lube.

The sieve attachment was purchased for our KA in 1977, and is still in annual use, with the N50.

This year, for my wife's birthday, the Hobart went to the local hot rod shop, actually the owner was excited to do the project.

He does motorcycles and high end custom work

The Hobart was inspired by what he had done to my tractor hood, I had painted the tractor, he only did the hood

We now have matching machines, both take multiple front attachments!!

Let me know what you think!!

You may have started a new trend...,

How busy is the bike shop where you had the work done?

The paint guy is near Roanoke VA, he works my stuff in as fill in work, so, he always has time.

He hand tapes the flames, I usually have him use left over paint from other projects, to keep cost down.

The Hobart was supposed to be the same "Mustang Orange" as the Gravely, he did not have enough left, so the Hobart got "Hot Rod Orange"

Close enough to the Gravely for us,,,

The Gravely looked like this, in June of 2013

Somebody will ask the cost, well $250 gets LOTS of paint work!!!!

The painter's wife is now nagging him for a Hobart!!

You know you are at his house, when you see the yellow and orange flames on his mailbox!!

A great paint and update on the mixer but the switch sort of looks overlooked, could use a polish, brushing or some colour too.  Not trying to knock batter out of the bowl but what's the story behind the switch plate?

I did not notice how bad the switch plate was 'til I looked at the pics,,, the paint guy told me it took most of an hour to get the dough off the machine so he could paint it, so I can not complain too much,,, LOL!!

Luckily, the insides were gone through only a couple thousand batches ago, so that should not need service for a while.

The paint guy said he could restore the name plate by hand lettering it, or do something custom, maybe I will save that for next years wedding anniversary, or, some other special date???

If we make it too perfect, the wife may refuse to get flour on it, EVERYBODY thought for sure the Gravely would become a trailer queen, but, I use it with joy almost every day.

Decisions, decisions!!

SweetMK,

I printed out a photo of your old Hobart with the 'New-Look' and our 1997 year old Hobart named 'Hobie' was very excited,,,,,, his dough rose.

Excellent job and during the re-ferbish how did his gears look if you remember?

SweetMK's picture

as well as everything else inside. The grease was rancid, the bad grease was found in several old machines our family owns, but, the gears always looked perfect.

The only maintenance I do is add a few drops of oil every couple months under the attachment cover, that is a bushing rather than a bearing, and it tends to dry out.

What I lube is the slow turning shaft with the square hole that drives attachments, there is LOTS of pressure on it when turning the dough hook in three loaves of whole wheat bread dough.

SweetMK,

Thanks for the info…. Ours does not have the little lubrication fitting that yours has on the top rear of the attachment housing.  I guess that is what it is.

So, we hope that maybe the later N50's were updated with a bearing in that area.  I'll look in my N50 shop manual.

Again, good job and fun to hear about.

Hey, BetsyMePoocho, if you get bored, maybe you could look up in your Amazon history the exact listing for that SUPER cool dough hook you have,,,

I have searched for a replacement for our straight hook, and the only ones I find are the "un-flanged" ones.

I would love to have the duplicate of yours!!! The spiral may stop the dough from climbing the hook, but, I figure why risk it, if I can find the one with the flange like yours!! Thanks,,,

In the mean time, we will crank with the straight hook,, ;-(

Ours does not have the little lubrication fitting that yours has on the top rear of the attachment housing.  I guess that is what it is.

That is a lube fitting, but, I do not use it,,, I just drip some oil in the attachment opening with the machine tilted back.

Then I stick a paper towel in the opening for a few minutes to catch the excess., Oh, yea, I run the motor for about a half minute to distribute the oil.

If you look at the Hobart design, hard cranking of any bowl attachment REALLY puts LOTS of pressure on the attachment socket,, I wonder how many KitchenAids would have been saved if they had a few drops of oil.

I would bet that all of these mixers are similar design, there is no room for a bearing,,,,,

SweetMK,

We purchased our spiral hook from the following site.  They gave very good service and were fast.  It was a good while ago that we got the hook and I notice on the site that hook is a little different.  Ours does not have the 'cone' funnel shape at the top.  It just might be a newer type.

All I can say is that the Spiral Hook made our Hobie a wonderful kneading machine.  The old 'J' hook always caused the dough to climb out of the bowl.  We never have the problem with the spiral hook and we get nice shinny, window pane dough much quicker without hot final temps.

Oh,,,, the same hook will fit all the KA 5qts.

Have fun and enjoy…..

Thanks, BetsyMePoocho, my dough hook arrived Thursday!! WOOT!

BUT, today was sauce day, we grabbed a few tomatoes out of the garden, sliced and warmed them, and strained them with the Hobart.

An "Action" shot!!

The seeds and skins;

The "Secret Sauce"!

Tomorrow might be "pizza day"!!

SweetMK,

Happy that you received the spiral hook.  It is the same one I have and I'm sure that you will like it's preformance.

I will add that all my dough weights are between 900g and 1,100g (final weights).  All dough hydrations are between 55% (bagels) and 85% (ciabatta).  So I never 'over-load' the N50 and the doughs never climb the spiral  hook.

I took your advise and applied a couple of squirts of oil into the attachment port.  The housing seems to run cooler.  Good advise.

Hey, can I PM you a 'pdf' of the shop manual I have for the N50's and would you compare it to yours.  Mine seems like a very, very old publication and is hard to read in areas.  I would like a newer version, but can not find one.  Also, did you say you have a parts manual?? (hint, hint)

By the way, I don't think that the tomato attachment is available anywhere.  You guys are sure lucky to have one.  My wife uses a messy hand crank one and hates to use it.

Hope your Pizza night is good…...
