Hello From Texas

Hi all,
I found this forum in my search for information on grain mills. I’m doing my research and trying to decide which grain mill would be best for my needs.

If any of you own one and wouldn’t mind giving me your ideas about what you like and don’t like about your mill I would really appreciate the input.

Thanks,
Betty

I have a Diamant mill.  I believe that Lehman's (in Kidron, Ohio and by mail/internet) is the exclusive distrubutor of this mill.

I love this mill. It is beautiful, well made and grinds very, very quietly - not just relatively quietly, very quietly. But.

It is not inexpensive. It is very heavy. You must have a firm surface on which to mount it and it must be bolted to that surface.  It is hand powered, although it can be motorized. It is supposed to handle oily and wet grains and legumes, but I think it has some limits in that regard.

If you look on bwraith's blog for milling experiments, I go on and on about it.  The quality of the flour is outstanding. I got mine on Ebay and that reduced the cost, but it is rarely found on Ebay

Lehman's also has a "find the perfect mill for you" quiz on their website - no obligation to buy...

Good Luck with your decision, hope this helps.

Thank you Proth5.

From my research I've decided to go with an Ultramill and a Marcato Marga Mulino Grain Crusher / Flaker.

I found both at a little online hippie juicer shop for a really good price. I got the Ultramill for making really fine flour and the Crusher / Flaker for making courser ground flour, meals, cereals and rolled oats. I was able to get both for a little less than I would have paid for a Nutrimill.

Thank you for your help, I'm looking forward to some hearty loaves of bread and bowls of good cereal.

Now what I need it some online sources for ordering grain.

Thank you,

Betty

Hope you enjoy your mill as much as I do mine.

I have ordered grains from Bob's Red Mill.  They have arrived in good shape and they give you a small discount for ordering on line.

Happy Milling.

I’ve spoken to people on several different forums about gain and they all say they order from Bob's Red Mill or a local co-op.

Since I live in a very rural area and we don’t have a local anything much less a co-op the net is going to be where I get my grain. I've looked at a few places on the net and Bob’s Red Mill does have the best prices and with the number of people who seem to use them I'm guessing they have a good turnover rate so the grain would more likely be fresh.

Thanks again,
Betty
