A few design changes

I made a few layout changes today. I'm trying to make more efficient use of space without reducing readability.

I also enabled user icons. You now can go to "My Account" and upload a small gif or jpeg to represent you. It will show up on any forum or blog posts you make, as well as in your comments.

Let me know if you run into any problems.

I may get a photo of me after making bread covered in flour and bits of dough as my icon ;))

neat new toy! :) Of course, I had to pop in to test it out.

That will be fun to have little pictures to put with names we have come to recognize on here now!

Not trying to be too picky or anything, but is there a way they could be a bit larger.  At 64x64 for the original and 32x32 for anyone adding a comment down the thread its a wee small.  I had to click on browndogs name just to get to her page to see what that little blob thing was.  At 64x64 I realized it was her dogs, duh.  But maybe at 100x100 with 50% for down stream posts, might make it a little easier to recognize.

Just wonderin, not trying to be negative or anything, please dont take it the wrong way.

You comment is not at all inappropriate. It is indeed small, perhaps too small. I did the same thing with browndog too.

My thought is that, even at the current size, it is enough space to distinguish one person from the next. I wasn't really trying to make it large enough that you can tell a lot about the person (say what color eyes they have), but simply to make it so each person could have an icon that identified them. Even just a distinctive smear of color would make it easier to scan a thread and see who is talking than having to read each person's name, you know? That was my main goal... to improve scanablility.

But I may bump 'em up in size. I kinda wanted to hold off until I saw what kind of icons people posted (or whether people used them at all. That may determine whether it seems like it was worth giving more screen real estate up for.

Well I couldn't resist, could I?

I figured I'd ease into this picture thing slowly.

Maybe sometime I'll sneak in the 'real' me. It's a treat getting faces to go with such familiar names, thanks!

I'm in with ya.  Folks here are pretty good over all.  You shouldn't have too many issues I would think.

would prefer the small photos! We look younger the smaller you get--no wrinkles. Thanks, Floyd, for the instant face lift.

Susan, I'm wondering if it would do the same for double chins and white hair? Not that it will be a problem for someone who STILL hasn't managed to post a photo - of anything! A.

Floyd,

Thanks so much for the user icons and site enhancements AND the great job you do. As for the icon size, for what it's worth, I favor smaller.  Susan has a very good point.  I am relatively new to the site but this is the best thing that's happened to me re: bread baking.  If the world was as civil, cooperative and helpful as the folks who particpate and contibute to this site it would be a far better place.

Thanks again,

I'm glad to see that the "new" has been reinstated, Floyd. (I JUST figured out that if I hit the "new" link, it automatically takes me to the posts I haven't seen...)

Like browndog, I may have to ease into showing an actual photo. If what I have uploaded is inappropriate or considered to be shameless self-promotion, I'll remove it....

Actual photos are not required. If you (or others) are more comfortable using an icon or avatar, I have no issues with that.

I, too, love the new changes to the site.  It is fun to compare the "real" faces with the ones I've imagined for everyone!!

Kudos, Floyd on keeping this forum so amazing!
