Vermont - Sourdough woodfired oven bakeries

Hi Fresh Loafers!

I am travelling to Vermont.  I am wondering in anyone had any tips on good sourdough wood fired oven bakeries in the Burlington or Montpelier areas.

I hope there is someone who can help me out!

Thanks

Just south of there you have King Authur Flour in Norwich VT

I live in Burlington, VT -- there is no shortage of great bakeries in the Burlington and Montpelier areas, for example Red Hen Baking Company (http://www.redhenbaking.com/), O Bread Bakery (http://www.obread.com/), Bread and Butter Farm (http://www.breadandbutterfarm.com/bakery) and Slowfire Bakery (http://slowfirebakery.com/) just to name a few.

...and I definitely second the idea of visiting KAF in Norwich.

Depending on where you're staying and what your plans are, I'd also highly recommend going to the Farmer's Market (Burlington's is on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., http://www.burlingtonfarmersmarket.org/) where you could visit the stalls of a lot of local bakeries in one shot.  :)

I thought they were asking for WFO bakeries - those are few and far between and I would think the bare minimum for someone looking for breads made by bakers the old fashioned but true artisan way.

KAF's education centre has a WFO and they mentioned the intention of building a pavilion over the original stone wood fired ovenall that remained of the store etc when the facilities were rebuilt last year.

That old stone oven must be a monster to get fired :-)  Can't Imagine JH working where there wasn't a WFO to make bread in - and he has 2 of them!  Do their bread classes like the rye one Varda recently went to use the WFO?  I didn't even know that the bakery had WFO bread.

Hi MJ,

Elmore Mountain Bread (www.elmoremountainbread.com) is a wood-fired micro-bakery in Elmore, VT (20 miles from Montpelier). I haven't been there, myself, but their website is lovely.

Good luck with your search,

Jacqueline

This may be too late but I would also add Bohemian Bread to the list as well. He sells at all of the local Co-Ops around the Montpelier area and has a special round of pastry that he sells on Saturday (or Sunday...I don't remember) at his house...good chance to check out his WFO. Elmore Mountain Bread is my favorite bread up there but they're bakery (and beautiful oven) is attached to their house so they don't let many visitors stop by for the sake of their privacy. Red Hen is great but not wood-fired. I would also second Bread and Butter....awesome assortment of ryes.

If you can get out to Gerard...do it. His bread is good but his personality is great.
