Annoying video ad on TFL

Hi Floyd,

Just wanted to let you know that this morning, some video ad kept appearing in the upper left-hand corner of every TFL page that I visited, automatically playing and announcing "Meet Kathy Gross, a pet nutritionist at Hills...".

Literally, every page I have visited has this ad playing automatically. And I even tried it in several browsers (Firefox and Chrome).

I understand the need to have advertising to help fund TFL, but hopefully this can be done without including ads that play back audio on every page and are outside of a user's control...aside from turning down my computer's volume.

Here's a screenshot of the ad in question (from Firefox), captured this morning around 12:20pm

And even worse, the way the same ad is placed in Chrome, it even blocks the "Fresh Loaf' masthead, see that attached screenshot:

Yeah, I saw it this morning too and agree it was obnoxious.

Are you seeing it now?  I haven't seen it in the last hour or so.  I'm trying to track down which network it came from so I can stop it, but it may have been an accidental placement that has already been removed.

Thanks for checking on it Floyd. I got a new (non-annoying) ad about 10 minutes later, so the problem resolved itself for me.

I was getting it also.  I turned it off within a few minutes..and should have remembered how I did it.  It was something I clicked on where I had given permission for this type of add.  There was a list and I clicked the button..it went away.  Everything else still works fine but the annoying add has stopped.

I'm trying to remember.  I also removed adds I was getting for products I recently looked at or purchased.   I had given Google some sort of permission to put adds up for products I had searched.  I was wondering how they knew what I was looking at seeing adds appearing inbetween The Fresh Loaf pages, beside the pages I was veiwing.  I think it was by removing their permission to do this I may have also been able to remove this add.

I so sorry, I just not literate in these areas and just got lucky, I guess.  But, I think it was something to do with my google permission. : /

Retargeting is what that is called.  See a brief explaination of how it works here.

Online ads are tending to get either more specific in their targeting, more invasive (like the auto-playing video ad or things that cover the whole screen), or blurred with content ("sponsored posts"). It is safe to say I'm not a fan of these trends and have been doing my best to limit the ads on the site to traditional display ads that aren't too invasive and can easily be distinguished from site content. The value of simple display ad space is, however, dimishing, which is why I've added a support TFL link to the footer and have been tinkering with a few other options, like merchandise.  Have the site and my family be less reliant on the advertising revenue would be nice.

(Also, I owe a big thank you to folks who have made a gift supporting the site. Thank you! Trying to serve you all has certainly been in my mind the past few weeks while switching to the new site and working out the kinks in the system.)
