You made it!

If you are seeing this, you've made it the new TFL server.  Hooray!

Feel free to leave a comment on here to test out the new system.  It doesn't have to be about bread!

Yay!

 Happy Bread =)

So hopefully folks will be seeing the new content soon.

There's still a few small usability quirks that will hopefully get improved over the next few days, but Floyd's busy getting the basic functionality switched over tonight.

test test. Did the caching issue get fixed? Posting this to find out.

In my profile, it seems that font is set to italics by default. Is this the case, or am I just being a tech dummy? Any way of changing specific words to plain (non-italic) text?

Also, there are some spacing probs. ie: in the Books section, each title runs into the next, rather than having a space, with each item given its own line.

Thought I'd mention these things in case they affect others as well.

The general appearance is great.

Cheers
Ross

dstroy's picture
dstroy

Oh I see what you're referring to - you mean the description piece in the actual profile page yes? I think this will be a usability nit we will get to after the bigger stuff is migrated. Floyd's still got to figure out all the subscription and email lists and that may have to wait until the morning too so as not to find out on waking up that the email system went haywire.

Small bickies in the scheme of things, I know. BTW, I'm using Firefox on a Win7 (64 bit) pc.

Hi Floyd,
I'm really looking forward to using the new site. It looks really good so far.
I just want to make you aware of a problem I had logging on to the new site. I got an error saying something like "this IP is blocked because there were too many attempts" or some such. I removed all my TFL cookies and then was able to log on and avoid this error message. It happened on both Firefox and Chrome. Anyway, you might want to alert other users to this issue. Until I figured out the cookie removal solution, there was no other way to contact you because I was locked out.

Thanks,
-Brad

Hey Brad,

Sorry about that!  I noticed that problem and think I've fix it.

Folks: if you still can't log in, drop me an email and let me know!

It works good and it looks good! Thank You, Floyd, for everything you do for us, through this site!

It was actually not anything to do with your cookies even - we got ourselves locked out too when some settings were being fiddled with - so you probably managed to hit it right about the time we were trying to get that fixed. Hopefully this shouldnt be an issue for anyone anymore.

Folks coming in over the next short while may notice some oddities with layout and spacing while issues get worked out. Floyd's currently trying to fix some little layout issues that are showing up at the top of this page now as I write this.

"this IP is blocked because there were too many attempts"

I had the same message for the first few attempts. So I reset my browser and sailed right in on the next try. Not sure if resetting had anything to do with it, tho.

Must be a big job to launch this new format. Thanks for all your hard work and for making this an excellent site.

Wow! The new site looks great. Congrats & thanks, Floyd! I am using Safari and am not able to see the photo posted in the original post, but I can see the one posted by destroy. Wonder if I need to change any settings?Could you please check?

Alpana

dstroy's picture
dstroy

Alpana - it's an animated gif - does your browser render other animated images? I know some older Safari browsers have problems with those - though I have not been able to reproduce this on my older Safari  (version 4.0.5).

That said, the animated pictures usually aren't something you find on this site so let us know if you are repeatedly finding images not loading for you.

Alpana's picture
Alpana

Tks for the reply, dstry. I don't think I have problem viewing any other photos so should be fine.
Another problem I realized is that I cannot login from my iPhone. I can see some content from iPhone but am not able to view majority of posts, specially blogs, as it gives "File not found" message once I click on a link. Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

dstroy's picture
dstroy

hmm. I just tried on my daughters ipod touch and wasnt able to recreate this with several different test accounts - but we did have an issue earlier today where we knocked the front page offline and folks were getting the 404 error because the front page *literally* was not accessable for anyone... so it might have been during that period when that was going on(?)

I am going to pull Floyd off the computer for a bit because he's back at debugging and we've not taken a break all day and at some point he's going to be more likely to break something new rather than fix it but we'll get back to this after we've had a bit of time offline. I'm noticing some stuff that was giving me problems managed to go away after I restarted my browser coming back to it too, so I'm hopeful that some of these issues are actually already working again now but just havent had a chance to clear out until folks have refreshed/restarted their browsers.

Alpana's picture
Alpana

Thanks for all the effort you all are putting in. I am sure everything will be sorted out in time. Till then I will just use my Mac and try reading something apart from bread when on move :).

dstroy's picture
dstroy

Thanks! The aim is to get everyone being able to view the site and make it better, afterall!

It wouldn't hurt to check back to see if it's still acting up the next time your phone is restarted too - incase you find it's something that gets fixed on reboot (90% of the time, a simple reboot flushes everything on the device and clears up so many of these caching issues... My system was showing quirks until I restarted my browsers too, and I also manually went and tried to toggle the permissions on your user setting so I'm hoping between one of those it'll clear up and behave right too!)

Alpana's picture
Alpana

I restarted my phone, reset the browser and opened the site again in a new page. I still cannot login & access blogs :(

Juergen Krauss's picture

Congratulations!

One thing - maybe I missed to reset something, but on Chrome/Win7 the site doesn't scale and I have to scroll horizontally -
on IE9/Win7 all is fine.

Thanks again for your hard work.

New Forum Posts and Blog Posts should be fixed now. That was weird - but those buttons that show editing (bold, italics, insert pictures, etc) should be showing up for logged in members everywhere they try to add content now. (except private messaging, which I think best leave without that for now)

OldWoodenSpoon's picture
OldWoodenSpoon

I tried to add an underline to a word in post a couple of minutes ago and could not find the buttons. I figured they would come along soon enough, then I ran into this post saying they should be working now... Not for me, on Windows 7 (64 bit) in Firefox 19.0.2. Just so you know there is still at least a piece of an issue left.

Thanks
OldWoodenSpoon

as this re: "editing" buttons, but if it is, I still do not see the editing controls/toolbar (text formatting, etc.) in Firefox. I logged out and back in to make sure nothing changed. Nothing did.

Here's a screenshot of what you should be seeing when you click the reply button:

that said, I just noticed a second issue with the way the actual upload media button is working in regular user permissions (I'll bug Floyd with that in just a sec), but at the very least folks should be seeing these buttons on the top of their new post and reply comment editing screens. I'm using Firefox and at least getting the buttons and the spellcheck on my test accounts.... what platform are you on?

OldWoodenSpoon's picture
OldWoodenSpoon

I have been out for the evening. I still don't see what you see, and I have a screenshot of the page here, but I may have to send it by PM, or even email, since I don't yet have the toolbar to use to put it here.

My platform is an HP quad-core with Windows 7 (64-bit) and Firefox 19.0.2 for my browser.

I could not paste the screen clip here, so I'll try a private message as soon as I can.

Good news too though: I got an email notice of your response. Congratulations on another dragon slain.

Thanks
OldWoodenSpoon

edit: Could not paste the clip into a PM.. No toolbar there either. I have emailed the clip directly to you. Let me know if you don't receive it by morning and I will try again. That is, if you have not already resolved it by then.

edit 2: I shut down the browser and restarted but it made no difference. Also, Firefox installed an update to version 20.0.2 on that restart, but that also has made no difference.

Hi Floyd and Dorota.

I'm also experiencing the issue mentioned by OldWoodenSpoon where the toolbar at the top of the comment box is missing. The comment box just looks like a plain text field with no menu items to format text, insert photos, etc. I found this problem to be consistent after trying the following platforms/devices/browsers:

Firefox 20.0 on Macbook Air running OSX 10.8.3
Safari 6.0.3 on Macbook Air running OSX 10.8.3
Chrome 26.0.1410.65 on iMac running OSX 10.7.3
Safari 5.1.3 on iMac running OSX 10.7.3

dstroy's picture
dstroy

I'm hoping that this is most likely to just be a case of ISPs caching DNS stuff on their end - since so many users are getting the right toolbar at this point, and some are reporting toolbars from home but not at work - which would further indicate this is a network funkiness that hopefully will shake itself out given a little time.

We actually just took a quick lunch break and found that when we checked the site from our phones it showed us the OLD site still, on phones which had been showing us the new site at home... and then we connected to the wifi at the lunch-place and it came up fine again, so this just illustrates that a lot of ISPs, especially cellphone carriers though clearly not exclusively, are doing a lot of cost-saving cachine on their end and it may just be a question of waiting for them to settle out. (we're on a pretty big cellphone carrier but I'm not exactly clear on the technical details of how this caching stuff works)

In the meantime, you should still be able to insert at least one picture with the new forum or blog post content type. YY - would you have the time and mind helping me troubleshoot this to make sure it's NOT actually a user-specific weirdness? Send me a PM and let me know....

OldWoodenSpoon's picture
OldWoodenSpoon

Looks like you found it, and fixed it!  Congratulations!  I found the toolbar here when I started this reply to let you know of the image insert failure in a test post.

I tried to create a test post in the Off Topic forum and upload a picture.  When I tried to preview the post after uploading the picture I got a nasty error page with the following error:

EntityMalformedException: Missing bundle property on entity of type taxonomy_term. in entity_extract_ids() (line 7663 of /var/www/html/thefreshloaf.com/includes/common.inc).

That's all I saved of it, but I assume it is in the logs (about 5 minutes ago)

Thanks for the toolbar fix!
OldWoodenSpoon

I got that error on preview too with the post I made today.  Fixing it is on my to-do list.

I think I fixed that preview problem by applying a patch today.

I'm not sure why we should be blocked from including pictures in our private messages. My friends and I exchange photos of things that we might not want to share with the entire community.

Edit: I got a photo to display by typing, all on one line.

noted and I'll see if we can address this.

At the moment, we have just been able to reproduce the no toolbars *anywhere* problem which seems to be associated with just *some* accounts, and we are currently troubleshooting that so that all of our community members will be able to use the features. I'll keep you guys posted as soon as we figure out what is going on - I know a number of folks have reported not seeing the bold/italics/add image/etc features so hopefully we'll figure this out shortly and have a fix for everyone.

Floydm's picture
Floydm

No one said you should be blocked from including images, Mango, we just don't have it working at the moment.  Actually.... maybe we do now?

MangoChutney's picture
MangoChutney

I took this:

"those buttons that show editing (bold, italics, insert pictures, etc) should be showing up for logged in members everywhere they try to add content now. (except private messaging, which I think best leave without that for now)"

to mean that the administrators thought it was best to leave that ability out of private messaging.

And no, the toolbar isn't there in PMs yet.  Since I've found a way to include photos in PMs without the toolbar, I'm set.  No hurry on my account.  *wink*

Floydm's picture
Floydm

Gotcha, that makes sense.  I think the "best to leave without that for now" meant less "because you don't need it" and more "if I put one more thing on Floyd's plate right now he's going to jump out the window so I'll wait to mention that until a bit later." Metaphorically speaking, of course.  ;)

I'll definitely try to look into that in a bit.

oops yeah sorry - what Floyd said!

He was coming a bit unglued by late yesterday afternoon and the mild geeky guy I know was turning a bit more...um... squirrely... when I made the mistake of bringing up some of the items that we'll want to get to but maybe need to not be tackled until he's got some of the other stuff like subscriptions and such figured out ;)

MangoChutney's picture
MangoChutney

We certainly don't want Floyd jumping out any windows, even if he has developed some squirrel-like abilities and could possibly clamber to the ground using tree limbs. *grin*

Nice look, over all. Thanks for all the hard work to get it this far.

dstroytest2's picture

Hey Juergen, I'm trying to reproduce this scaling problem on our virtual machine here (windows 7 and Version 26 of Chrome and I'm not able to reproduce it here - seems to be scaling pretty good, both logged in and not. Some slight funkiness with the sharing buttons getting mildly cut off on the left side sometimes, but not enough I think for me to divert Floyd from the other stuff he's trying to figure out right now... but I'm definitely not seeing this thing that you say makes you have to scroll horizontally, even when I resize the browser it seems to pop into the adaptive frameworks. Can you let me know if this is still happening for you, or maybe PM me a screenshot?

We've verified there's a permissions issue causing the general editor buttons not to show up on those make-new-posts for forums and blogs - bad! Working on fixing that now.

Thanks a lot, very much appreciated.
I will pm a screenshot if it still occurs.

yes, for now you'll only see the number of members who have logged in showing up in that "who's online" list. The plus side is that there's some new backend stuff dealing with how much the database is getting hit by anonymous users that should definitely help with site performance.

Nice update Floyd. The new site looks great! I know it will take some time to fine tune everything and time for us to find our way around.

Great job, congratulations!

Floyd,

Being a software developer myself I know how hard these upgrades can be. I hope that things are going smoothly.

I did notice some unusual behavior, I've tried this on Safari, Chrome and Firefox. The links on the home page (like to this article) don't change color after being read.

I feel like I woke up in a new country and my clothes are in a different closet. I get this feeling often when I come home to Austria after being gone for months. The trick it just to relax and not think too much. Open a few drawers and cupboards and look around. Doesn't hurt to find a cocktail or tall beer and naturally a slice of bread to chew on while paging around.

What's with the Wonder bread white behind the type?

clazar123's picture
clazar123

I think I am not able to see something on the left side of the page and there is no horizontal scroll. I see the edge of 3 or 4 boxes and "...eet" under the top box. I am on IE9 with WIN7.

Otherwise looks great! I agree with the Helen Keller comment but I think I'll take up Mini's idea and just look around with a little something to gnosh on as I do that.

Thanks Floyd! Your work is appreciated!

dstroy's picture
dstroy

Let me know if this is still happening for you clazar123 - and if so, a screenshot would be super helpful if you can manage it - I'm not reproducing this on our test box right now but we may be dealing with an issue that has already resolved itself...

clazar123's picture
clazar123

Well, I learned how to do a screenshot but there are no visible controls on how to insert it into the post box. I can do the cut and paste with text from the other posts using ctrl-c-ctrl-v but that doesn't work. I didn't really expect it to but I thought I'd give it a try. So how is a picture inserted in a post?

Are those options on the left side of the screen perhaps? That is the side I cannot see. There are also no text/font controls so no bold text for me.

I am running WIN7 (64bit version)-IE9 (32 bit version). EDIT: on a desktop pc
Actually, I just accessed the site on my 10 inch tablet-Samsung Galaxy Note running Android JellyBean. Same issue-can't see the whole screen and not controls to insert a pic.

Floydm's picture

IF you want to attach it to a comment, check either the little tree or mountain in the toolbar.  They both give you a way of uploading images.

dstroytest's picture
dstroytest

OK - it should be fixed now. (again.) seemed to blow up when he added the spellcheck in. Try again, ok?

gary.turner's picture
gary.turner

This is due to a small menu block (links for Facebook, Twitter, G+, etc.) which is set as {position: fixed;} in order for it to always be set on the page 50px down from the top. The trouble arises from the fact that fixed, absolute and shifted relative position elements are not in the flow, i.e. they are neither aware of other elements, nor are other elements aware of them, and that includes the html element which owns the main scroll bars.

In this case, the element has a negative 80px left margin which pulls it (what should be) off the page. For some obscure reason, its place in the browser window is not related to the viewport, but to the content's wrapping container. Which is why, I guess, I can see it when I enlarge my browser window. You'll need to explain the nuances to me, Floyd.

It is my own opinion that fixed position elements are user-unfriendly and waste precious window real estate. Obviously, I'm in a minority position (that's a pun, son) on this issue.

cheers,

gary

revise our comments to other posts? I don't see a revise reply? Also the time stamps reply are so faint i can hardly read them - but I am old and my eyesight is weak :-)

dstroytest2's picture
dstroytest2

dabrownman: There should be, under each comment you make, little text links that say "reply" and "report" right now... and an "edit" one too, (I'm going to test that when I make this post with this account to make sure it's not a permissions issue.
It is in the lighter font that is also used in the timestamp though, which may be rendering too faint on your configuration, so we'll look into that iE9/Vista layout asap.

dstroytest2's picture
dstroytest2

oops - ok edit link is broken on regular user accounts. standby.... Edited to add: fixed - for trusted users. So folks that have been verified (you are in that list!) should have this ability. Let us know if you're not getting the link rendered.

dabrownman's picture
dabrownman

which 2 of the 7 comments are the new ones?

Floydm's picture
Floydm

I added a border around the new comments.  It also says "*new*" now over by the date.  An oddity of the way I am doing that though is I don't think you can search on "new" to find the new comments.  I'll see if I can get that working too in a bit, but hopefully this fix makes things a bit better.

gary.turner's picture
gary.turner

That's probably as good a solution as I've seen anywhere. You done good.

Then it all went down hill. You brought back that silly enter/return = new paragraph thing (results in a blank newline effectively, even if the html is more structurally proper---interpreting 2 <br>s as a paragraph end would be more intuitive for the user) and for a while, spell-check was automagical. I don't mind switching to plain text plus html to fix the enter issue, but feel it is not user friendly. I can't think of another forum that does as thefreshloaf does. Spell check on should be the default.

cheers,

gary

Floydm's picture
Floydm

Agreed that it'd be nice if the spell check was just on.

The WYSIWYG editor was throwing errors complaining that it didn't have a full install. When I reinstalled some config setting must have gotten lost. I'm continuing to work on it, hoping to get it working the way folks would like and expect it to.  Your patience is appreciated.

Hey guys - when you report any issues you may be encountering, please let us know what system and device you're using, as we've now got different behaviors going on for Android vs. Iphone, Tablets, Ipads, in addition to the Mac/Windows and what browser thing to keep track of!

This will help us greatly when drilling down to figure out what may be causing any problems you may be finding on the new system.

Weird! I'm seeing a bunch of user pictures which are appearing different now from the way they were before the migration when I compare pre-move profiles to the ones we have now.  Maybe some got reassigned after a certain date? I'm going to go through and try to fix them when I catch old ones looking different from the new ones, but I can't say I remember everybody's user pictures so I will surely be missing a bunch and we have so many members!

If you find your userpic (you meaning collectively to all our members, since I know Floyd just fixed yours manually, Song_of_the_Baker) is looking wrong, feel free to upload a new one in the My account settings.

That one is up there but you probably hit the site to check right when Floyd was flushing the cache to fix some issues so it wasn't showing up. He is coming a bit unglued at the moment so he's taking a break until he can see straight again. Sorry if you encounter some glitches tonight.

Yes I see that it popped up later.

Tell Floyd to get away from the computer....we can live with what's going on here. Nothing is life threatening for the workings of this site.

I think he needs to go bake some bread... pull it out of the oven ... close his eyes and sit with it under his nose for a while... once cool enough dig in and enjoy.

Once he has done that, then let him go back to the computer.

Bread is good for the brain and nerves.

I'm resetting my bookmark so it goes directly to the activity tracker because the text and photos are so huge on the main page, it's hard to see the trees from the forest.

Might add that am on Windows XP SP3 using the most recent version of Chrome and the editing command bar is missing.

I also have my iPad (iOS 5.1.1) logged into the site using Safari and the editing command bar is absent as well.

The site comes up using my iPod Touch 5 (iOS 6.1.2 - also Safari). Editing command bar missing.

Have Windows 7 at home - will see how that runs later tonight.

dstroy's picture

Actually, this gives me great hope that it's a caching issue that should clear up soon - from what I understand, a lot of ISPs do caching stuff too, and with the changing of the server and the DNS migration, plus a "newer version of the same software" - there's a lot of stuff that some (especially the smaller ISPs) do to keep stuff cached so it's not actually fetching *all* the new little bits quite yet, and it may just be a question of clearing the old stuff out before it starts working right. I actually don't know how to clear the cache on an iPad or iPod, but I think these things will get worked out and it might just be a question of how long before your network catches up fully.

We've been testing it here on Windows, Macs, Android, Ipad, Ipods, with accounts that have every level of permissions set up and are getting the command buttons on all these devices (though yesterday there was a lot more flakeyness while the changeover stuff and cache was still not flushed - we will flush things again but I have a feeling a lot of these quirks will resolve on their own within some hours).

The text on the front page is definitely looser by design because it was absolutely impossible to mash fingers on touchscreens with the old layout, but we might be able to bump down the size on large large screen displays and such a pixel or so. We will fiddle with the minor display dressing settings a bit more as we get the big stuff buttoned down, but right now our top priority is getting the site fully here and making sure there's nothing gaping that will cause the whole site or performance to crash.

In the meantime, I think you guys will find there's going to be a ton of cool new stuff we'll be able to do now that we're not running on the old software, but yes, there's a bit of a curve as we all transition and no one ever likes change. The old stuff was really getting so outdated that we were running into issues dealing with all the new browsers and devices and screen sizes which didn't even exist back when the site was started, not to mention the potential problems with security that were starting to mount with outdated software, that it was a bit like having an ancient VW bug and not being able to find parts for it anymore. We hope you guys will be patient with us while we try to get things up and running smoothly again.

LindyD - we're fiddling with the font sizing a bit - is this better? What do you think?

LindyD's picture

Much, much better on the iDevices. Thanks!

On my office Windows XP machine, I just used Chrome's zoom function to resize the page to 90%. Purely subjective, but it works for me.

Will test the Windows 7 rig when I get home.

Deleted my Chrome cache and cookies before coming back here and low and behold, the tool bar is now present (Win 7)

Ditto for my iPad.  Hope that's not going to be required for each visit, though.

One more rig here at home to check - Win XP Pro,

Thanks for all your hard work.

I've been inactive for quite quite a while and only started to post again in the last couple of days. I like the new look, but somehow my picture has been replaced by a loaf that does not belong to me. :)

I just fixed it for you jyslouey. I'm not sure why, but a huge amount of users had their user-pictures swapped out for completely random pictures in the database, and we haven't been able to figure out why it only happened to some users and not others, so I've spent much of yesterday combing through user profiles and trying to match up the pictures that were different before the migration and fixing those, but we have many thousands of users so I won't be able to catch them all.

Too bad...I kind of liked my user photo as a random loaf of bread! :)

LOL isand66! You were lucky - a lot of people had funky looking photos of bowls of bubbling starters and other random images selected - one even had a photo of a razor blade (presumably an example photo used somewhere on the site in a discussion of scoring) assigned as their profile picture!

Hopefully no one logs on and finds their icon is a photo of someone's "baking disaster" and decides that it was a personal comment!

for your time and effort in getting my picture sorted.  I'm also very pleased to see that the tool bar is now visible.

I don't consider myself qualified to comment on the visual appeal of the new design. So I will restrict myself to the UI's effect on usability and accessibility.

Long threads are paged, and I have not found how to stop it or control the number of posts per page. When trying to go to new posts in a long thread, I simply get the OP and have to click the link to the next page. The trouble with that is that the link takes you to the top of the next page, and the page repeats the OP, and I can't see any indication of which posts are new. Since replies are threaded, it's not simply the last posts in the queue that are newest, a new post may appear anywhere in the mix.

So, there are two issues: Paged topics that break the "new post" linkage, and no marker for new posts. Paging itself and repeating the OP at the top of each page rate as annoyances; albeit very irritating annoyances. If you're going to have paging, the user ought to be able to configure how many posts per page he prefers.

Response times are very slow. I expect you'll be tweaking that, so no hoo-haw.

I agree with dabrownman that the tracker/recent-posts link is by right and ought to be at the top. Having to scroll to the bottom is user-unfriendly.

I've already expressed my opinion on the fixed position links above.

Like others, I find the post date/time data, and the reply and report links to be unnecessarily faint. Combine that with the small font size, and you have accessibility issues.

cheers,

gary

Honestly I didnt even realize we had that tracker page down there until now. Floyd informs me that the tracker is something that came with the new software - and it's part of the core of drupal and we're still getting to know our way around what we can change and what we can't. A lot of changes in the way it behaves were made and argued about by thousands of developers in the Drupal community so we're not necessarily going to be able to change all of the things we want but we'll see what we can do.

I like some of the changes like how it looks, but yeah, there are some things we're not as crazy about but we'll have to see what we can work with there. One thing that changed has to do with how the system flags "new" content, so what hasn't been put on the new site is dressing treatment (like visual indications that something like a comment is new) yet but I'm thinking there's gotta be a way to do that since it's flagging new content in the blog view and then there's also all the new comments showing up in the recent comments block on the front page which jump to the right place - but we've got a bit of investigation to do first, and our priority if going to be getting folks coming to the site from the main pages to be able to see those features.

We're fiddling a bit with some minor changes to the font sizes and such right now to hopefully find something that everyone is happy with.

I think what is just barely visible on the left side of the page is the corner of the box that has the Twitter,Facebook and pinterest links. Not much that I would miss right now but that may change

Yay! I have a toolbar!

dstroy's picture
dstroy

Yay! Toolbar issues should be fixed for folks now (thanks to user yy for lettting us "hijack" your account to track this one down!)

Everyone that's been having problems, take a look at making a reply to a comment or post, and also at creating new blog or forum posts - those tools should now be there for folks.

I think the bits you're seeing on the left clazar123 are indeed the new sharing links for twitter and such - I'm seeing this on some of my devices and not on others so we've still got some minor tweaks to figure out yet, but I think we've made great progress! The toolbar thing was quite the mysterious one!

I still see things as a single column on older MSIE (6.x and 7.x) browsers, but I should be fined for still having them around.  Unless thelogs indicate these are common, don't burn any fuel trying to tune for them.

Floyd & Dorota, almost everything is fixed for my "i" gadgets now. I can even see the animated film from both my Mac as well as iPhone. The only thing remaining is that I still cannot login from my iPhone. Not a big deal as I can see all the posts & blogs so it is great. Love the new format for iPhone. Much better than having to read everything crimped in small space. Great going, guys!

Sorry Jonathankan - just fixed it to your old one for you. We had a bunch of users get their user pictures swapped around (but not everyone - it was very strange!)  and I spent much of yesterday combing through hundreds of user profiles trying to fix them but I clearly am going to miss a lot!

If anyone else finds their old user picture has changed and wants their own one back shoot me a private message and I'll be able to get it back for you!

Hi Floyd,

Looking good.

Here's one thing: I had my old "recent posts" page bookmarked (e.g., http://www.thefreshloaf.com/tracker/xxxxx )

Unfortunately because of the way that the new navigation is set up, there is no "Login" link when I get the "Access Denied" message, if I haven't logged in in a while.

It would be really really helpful to just include a "Login" link on your main site navigation (perhaps next to "Home"?). Also including that link in the footer of the site would be helpful too. IMO you can't have too many Login links!

dstroy's picture
dstroy

That access denied message is actually just another little bug - it appears to happen when you logout. On the to-do list.

cranbo's picture

One more thing Floyd

I noticed on a recent thread that I was subscribed to that I can't tell how new messages are being displayed in the content of the thread. The old system has " *new " somewhere by the post date IIRC. This made it easy to use the browser's "find" feature to locate that text and new posts.

Any way you could bring that back? I'm sure you have a growing "to do" list right now :)

Floydm's picture
Floydm

I just added my account / login to the footer and will see about doing something more global.  And, yes, getting "new" back is on my list.

I can't pm pictures, therefore I attach a screenshot to my comment here.

I am using Win7, Chrome Version 26.0.1410.64 m

Screen resolution 1280X1024

I like the site a lot.

Nice to have's (I think they are all on your list):

Recipes and Recent Posts in a more prominent place, on each of the views.

Thanks a lot.

I'll check Windows 7/Chrome today again too.  Thanks again for sharing that.

Today I tested the recipe functionality and I am with David in respect of the limitations.

Posting recipes with preferments is tricky - I created a second recipe for my preferment and I marked up the ingredients for the scald and the final dough in the "Notes" section of the ingredient. Still trying to think of a workaround for Bakers %.

When trying out the scaling functionality (with my Rye Sour, from 210g to 430g)  I got the same formatting problem on IE10 and Chrome, see below:

#

I hope you are getting some sleep,

Juergen

dstroy's picture
dstroy

oh huh! That is weird - it works for doubling and halving - just not changing the yield on it's own. I was able to reproduce this with the orange cake too, but not with the cookies. The banana nutella cake only acts a little weird when you change the yield to 3 (or multiples of), but appears to work otherwise, however the yield I put for that one was "1" for a loaf.

Juergen Krauss's picture
Juergen Krauss

Hi Dorota,

I noticed the recipe module tries to convert into fractions (when I converted the recipe of the Vollkorn bread from 6 loaves to 2 loaves)

Maybe there is a problem? I know it is not yur code.Just checked the banana cake - scaling to 1.5 loaves will give you an amount of

1 1⁄2000000 c sugar.

(This confirms my suspicion - some roundig might be a good idea...)

Floyd,  when you have a chance, could you please look into this: on Firefox for Android this site doesn't allow to re-size the screen and is difficult to read, way too small, while other sites work just fine...

Thank you.

dmsnyder's picture

Hi, Floyd & Dorota.

First: Yay! Strong work! Thanks!

Second: I'm on a variety of Macs using Safari.

Third: I just "contributed" a recipe for testing purposes. I note:

1. On the image uploading function. the "Chose file" button goes to my local storage directory. The "Upload" button doesn't do a thing. The button labels are misleading, unless this is a bug. I would expect "Choose file" to take me to my TFL library of already uploaded images. I would expect "Upload" to take me to my local mass storage. (The Comment text box toolbar icon works fine, as before the site update.) I think we should be able to re-use images that have already been uploaded for a blog entry, for example, when contributing a recipe.

2. The Ingredients section doesn't explicitely provide for pre-ferments. So many of our bread recipes call for a poolish, sponge, etc. or for a levain feeding, this is significant. The solution that occurs to me is to duplicate the Ingredients and Instructions sections of the input screen. If there is no pre-ferment, just leave that section blank, and it won't save, right?

3. The Notes and Instructions sections of the input screen appear in that order, but display in reverse order when saved. I think you might want to fix that.

4. See "First:" above.

David

Floydm's picture

Hi David,

Thank you for trying the recipe out and sharing your feedback!  I've fixed a couple of the things you mentioned, like the ordering of the fields in the entry and output.

I agree, as it stands now the recipes aren't terribly flexible and don't have a good way of handling multiple stages and things like pre-ferments. I'm not sure how much control I actually have over this code and whether I could do something like add a second block of ingredients for the preferment.  I'll look into it once I've put out some of the more pressing fires here.

Dorota and I were also discussing, if I can't split it into multiple ingredient groups, whether simply calling "ingredients" "shopping list" or something like that would be better.  We've also wondered whether changing the link in the navigation from "Recipes" to "Formulas" or ... I'm not sure, something else, would be better.

What I don't want is this addition to discourage people from blogging or posting in the forums.  I don't imagine these (recipes) ever being as good or as flexible as the free-form entries you and others have been doing -- the more structured content-type is inheritly constricting and reductive -- but I thought I should put it out and there to let community members decide if it is useful or not. It has some neat built in features, such as the scaling and automatically linking to posts named after specific ingredients.

As I said, feedback from you and other folks who try it will be extremely helpful in determining whether this is something to build further upon or whether it is something we prune in a month or two.  I'll certainly do what I can to respond to your suggestions.

Best,

-Floyd

Sorry for late gratitude but thank you so much, Floyd and Dorota, for all the hard works you put in.  I've only managed to spend a very  short time in exploring this wonderful new site, but so far it looks really great and more user-friendlier.  I'll report IF I come across any problem, etc.  in the future but it sounds like you've alrealy sorted out most of teething problems.  FYI I use a desktop (Window 7), a tablet (Nexus 7 with Android 4.2.2.JellyBean) and iPhone 4. and so far it all look good on any of them.

Thank you! :D

Hi Floyd. I asked you a question on this thread, but am thinking you may not have seen it. Don't mean to hurry you, so if it's just that you haven't had time to get back, no worries of course. I'll repeat the question here, since it's probably a more appropriate thread to seek clarification on aspects of the new updated TFL.

On the thread I linked to above, which is an old blog of mine, Janet posted a comment and query a couple of days ago. On the old site, a recent post like hers would have caused the thread to appear on the Recent Posts page, and I would have noticed it there as soon as I opened up TFL. In this case, though, it does not appear. The only reason I knew she'd posted was an email notification I received.

Is it intended with the new site that not all new posts appear on the New Posts page, and if so, what is the criteria for which do appear and which don't, pls? Just curious for future reference.

In this aspect, I preferred the old site, because often posts like Janet's might come up on a thread I didn't author, or to which I was not subscribed, and it was good to be alerted to "revived" older posts like this.

Cheers
Ross

Hi Ross,

Sorry I didn't reply but I did see you comment and I'm pretty sure I fixed it so it is working the way you preferred now.  Does it look right to you now?

That page is paginated on the new site too, so if you want to go back further than 100 comments you easily can now.

Best,

Not so much concerned about the social media feeds being cut out of the iPad screen, but not being able to resize the screen is concerning.  Close inspection of photos can be quite helpful.
