Wheat 'dust' in the bottom of the 25lb bag

I just poured a new bag of hard wheat into one of my buckets and noticed a fair bit of dusty wheat bran type stuff in the bottom of the bag.  Is this normal?   I haven't noticed this in the past, and maybe this is an older bag of wheat (although it just came in at the store).

I just want to make sure this is from settling and NOT bugs!

Thanks!

Anke

My guess would be that the grain was just not as thoroughly cleaned as you are used to, rather than having bugs.  If you had found gritty sand-like dust at the bottom, though, I'd lean more toward bugs for sure.  The only way to be pretty certain is do a close inspeciton now, and then to check the container for webs now and then.  Or, just bag up the grain and freeze it for a week or so to make sure.  You can mill it straight from the freezer later, and it will still make great flour.

Hope you're not bugged!

ok....well, it did seem like maybe it wasn't as clean as usual...but of course, I had already gotten rid of all of it when I posted.  I did slowly pour the grain in the bucket and didn't see any bugs or wheat with holes in it.  I once got a 50lb bag of wheat that had bugs and, yuck, I don't want them again!  I have since soley purchased the Wheat Montana stuff and have been really happy with it.

One thing that is interesting is how much larger these wheat berries are compared to my last bag - both are hard white spring wheat.

....I will be on bug patrol for the next couple of months.

Thanks a bunch!
